Makuti is thatching made from the sun-dried leaves of the coconut palm. It is widely used across East Africa and can withstand sun, rain, wind and other harsh environments. Thatch provides warmth in winter and cool in the summer. It provides insulation equal or better than modern roofing standards.
It's an easy technique to learn but an hard one to master. In this workshop we'll learn everything about that, from the identification of the right plant, to the actual roofing.
We'll start gathering some leaves from the palms that grow around the camp (and some coconuts for later refreshment) and putting them to dry for future use. Then, using the already dried leaves I store, we'll start weaving the actual tiles. The tiles can be used for everything, roofing, wall covering, shading and so on.
After crafting an adeguate number of tiles, we can start with the tatching, we'll climb onto the roof and start covering it with the tiles we made.
You'll learn a priceless craft to which you can resort in many occasions: even at home you can make Makuti Tiles and teach others how to do it, you can use them in your garden, on your balcony or terrace, or even in the unlikely event you'll get lost in the forest and need to build your self a survival shelter ;).
Comprised in the workshop you'll also get refreshment and a quick training in how to climb palm trees!

Hello everyone, I'm Harrison Hare Karisa, a Watamu native and member of the Mida Creek Community.
I'm the manager of the Mida Creek Nature Camp and for many years before that I worked as a builder.
During my training I learned a lot and in the year 2018 I decided to use my new skills to build my Camp from scratch.
I enjoy building using natural materials and traditional techniques and since my customers showed me lot of interest into that, I thought it would be fun to create an experience where everyone that wants to learn more about traditional Kenyan building technique can come and experience it first hand!

As a Kenyan looking to learn more about a different culture in my country, this experience was very informative and enjoyable. I actually intend to use makuti on a roof at home after meeting Harrison and Chizo.

We had an amazing time with Harrison. He showed us the incredible tree houses he had built with makuti roofs. We felt very special to be able to learn this skill. He was amazing and it was a really special experience. Highly recommend!

Authentic. I really enjoyed this experience because it was given by a local Mgiriama. I was in a real eco-friendly village with a guide that is building his place slowly using local materials. I learned a lot more than how to make a thatched roof. I was able to walk through the village and see the cottages up close. The atmosphere was nice. The setting was beautifully rustic- simple, natural, and lush. It's an experience I won't soon forget. I took a motorbike from Watamu to the camp. We turned off the road and rode through the forest to meet up with Harrison. I knew from the moment I arrived that this was going to be an authentic experience and not an overly commercialized one. Harrison greeted me with a huge smile and showed me around his place...tree houses, outdoor shower, floor toilet. Even the bed frames were handmade with wood and braided sisal (I think). Then the tour and class began in a wonderfully relaxed way. Harrison and his friend showed us what to do, taught us about the trees as we passed, and climbed the coconut trees for us to get us some sweeeeet coconut water. Delicious fruit and experience.
