X'se tagħmel

I run half-day walking tours through Antietam Battlefield located just outside Sharpsburg, MD. In this 3 hour experience, guests will learn about the amazing people who clashed in an American moment that shaped American history forever.

Philosophically I believe that a tactile learning experience, that of touching and physically being present in a location, gives a greater depth of learning and aids profoundly in our understanding of the world. I have had my greatest teaching experiences while on study abroad with students. I hope through this endeavor I can use my experience and knowledge to help guest maximize their experiences.
Other things to note
We will be driving from point-to-point on the battlefield, normally less than 1/2 mile between points. We will also walk to some locations on unpaved but level ground. Please make sure to wear appropriate shoe and clothing on the day.

For the last twenty years, I have been a professor of history at various colleges in Maryland. Fourteen years ago I became a full time associate professor at Howard Community College in Columbia, Maryland. Over last twelve years I have had the privilege of running over twenty study abroad classes to five different countries (Ireland, France, the Netherlands, Turkey and the United Kingdom). I have also taken students on dozens of day trips to Washington D.C., Philadelphia, New York, and Baltimore as well as numerous Civil War Battlefields. I have also helped run dozens of camping trips and outings for my sons’ scout troop.

We had a great tour with Frederick. He is very knowledgeable about Civil War history and presented the day of the battle in chronological order which made it more interesting. He seemed to be able to answer all of our questions with ease. Very friendly and personable guide!

We highly recommend this tour! We couldn’t have been happier. Frederick is so knowledgeable and keeps his tours small so the experience is personalized. He’s friendly, funny and has a great love for history. 5 stars!

GREAT experience touring Antietam with Frederick. He did an amazing job making the battle come to life. He’s a professor by trade, and you can tell he’s passionate about history and helping others learn. We started at the visitors center with an overview of the land, leaders on both sides, and why this was such a pivotal battle in the Civil War. We drove to a series of stops matching how the day unfolded, starting in a cornfield around 5 am, and ending at a cemetery. Since we’re in a pandemic, we drove separately to each site but there wasn’t any issue losing him or getting lost. Highly recommend this tour whether you’re a novice or Civil War buff. Frederick was incredibly patient with my multitude of questions, and each time, I was impressed by the range of knowledge he demonstrated about this battle, the Civil War, and history in general.
