The best way to explore a country is with your taste-buds!

Our 'Cheese School' takes place in our 1930's chambre d'hote in the beautiful Livradois Mountains and forests. Without leaving the kitchen table, we take you on a journey around the famous Auvergne 'Route des Fromages' (saving you a several day road trip!), tasting and discussing the Auvergne's 5 AOP cheeses and, as a bonus, lesser-know local artisan cheeses.
Taste different milk types - goat, cow and sheep, raw milk versus pasteurised, fresh cheese alongside mature. Immerse yourself in French food culture with myths and legends behind each cheese. Discover how to pair different styles with wines, beers, ciders or soft drinks and try interesting new accompaniments. Learn what to look for when buying cheese, how best to store, cut and present your cheeseboard for personal pleasure or parties alike.
Our cheese tastings are in English, include accompaniments, drinks and could quite happily replace lunch or supper! And, if like us, you fall in love with the region's produce, we'll happily assist you to 'meet the maker' and share our favourite markets and 'secret' artisan producers.
Other things to note
Please let us know if you have any dietary requirements or preferences in advance. Children are more than welcome but sadly, we do not accept pets. We have parking and hard-standing for motorbikes.

I am an award winning chef, food writer and broadcaster, with a passion for local food and an obsession with cheese. With my husband (an award winning restaurateur with over 20 years of experience pairing wine, beer, spirit and soft drinks with diverse menus and foods) we live in the Auvergne, possibly the most famous region in France for cheese. Together, we have trained hundreds of hospitality professionals (as well as a few 'normal' people!) in the art of cheese tasting, pairing, handling and presentation. Once settled in, we set off on an edible journey around the Auvergne, tasting AOP cheeses and discovering lesser know artisanal gems. A unique opportunity to taste how different processes , age, location and the cheese-maker's individuality effect the cheese's flavour. Sit at ease in good company and let your tastebuds do the traveling.

Superbe expérience pour découvrir les fromages de la région avec les hôtes très accueillants. Même les enfants peuvent bien s’amuser .

Nous avons passé un merveilleux moment, les hôtes sont captivants et nous font découvrir une sélection de fromages qui valent le détour ! Ce moment partagé a été un réel plaisir.

Absolutely phenomenal+++! A MUST for any cheese lover... not only will you taste amazing cheeses, but you learn many other interesting facts too. I rented a car in Clermont-Ferrand and drove to Olliergues - it was worth every Euro (and the drive is beautifully scenic too)! I cannot say it simpler: - if you can get there - GO!!!! You will not regret it! Nigel and Sam are fabulous hosts! I will definitely recommend this experience (and do it again if I'm fortunate enough to return to France in Future)!

Belle expérience sur les hauteurs du parc naturel d'Auvergne. Nous avons été très bien reçu par nos hôtes. La dégustation fromage et boissons est à la fois élégante, conviviale et en quantité suffisante.

A wonderful experience, do not hesitate to book! Sam was incredibly knowledgeable not only about the cheeses but also the region as a whole, and Nigel provides equally thorough commentary on the alcohol pairings. Absolutely a feast, so come hungry as well as ready to learn!
