Join me for a personally guided journey along a trail that's loved by locals, but little known by tourists. We'll walk the 4.25 mile trail along a beautiful wooded creek bordered by thick native foliage to search for treasures from the past. We'll learn about the area's coal mining history and seek out remnants of the past hidden from those unaware of the fascinating stories that haunt this urban outpost. See where President Rutherford Hayes visited, discover a hidden mine shaft and stumble upon relics of once-bustling towns that are being reclaimed by Mother Nature. You'll learn about the plants - the friends and the foes - and taste some along the way. You'll get to take a Forest Bath. These woods are filled with wonder and beauty. You won't forget this true Northwest experience - perfect for everyone - families, kids, dates, students, corporate teams, your Pandemic Pod. We’ll make sure you have a great time. Mask up, bring your friends, have some high-quality outside fun!
Other things to note
Bring sturdy walking shoes (tennis shoes are fine; no open-toed shoes, unless they are hiking sandals). Transportation is included from a spot easily accessed by public transportation. Or, we can drive separately and meet at the trailhead. Guide has been fully COVID vaccinated. Hand sanitizer provided.

I'm a Northwest native who is passionate about getting into the woods. I have been hiking in the Northwest for several decades and am skilled at leading groups. As a journalist and writer, I can captivate my guests' interest with tons of history and stories. I love Northwest art, history, hiking, running, walking and skiing. I try to get outside every day - rain or shine. Join me!

I'll pick you up at a central location on Mercer Island (easily accessible via public transportation) and we'll drive off the island to the Coal Creek and Red Town trails, former home of several now-hidden coal mines. If the weather cooperates, we'll stop at a secret view spot along the way. Because of COVID restrictions, all passengers are required to wear masks inside the car. If you would prefer, you can drive your car to the trail head.

Cynthia accommodated us on a rainy day. She is knowledgeable and knows the place in and out. We have done a lot of hikes but never tried a guided tour until now. I’m glad we did, we very much enjoyed our hike with our two Australian Shepherd girls Boba and Mocha :) Highly recommended for the locals too!

I thought this hike was going to be a regular follow me hike but it was so much more! I LOVE our Host Cynthia, she was amazing and made the hike so much more fun with the history behind the trail. We all enjoyed ourselves and she provided yummy snacks! We also ate berries along the way from the trees and i love how she would quiz my kids. I would definitely recommend Cynthia and if we are ever back in Seattle we would 100% like to meet up with her.

This is such an amazing time. Cynthia is super friendly and knowledgeable and shows you things you wouldn’t normally see if you were hiking on your own. This is worth it!

Our group had a great experience with Cynthia! The weather was awesome and the location was great. The snacks tied in nicely - homemade dip, nuts, and maple syrup - all relating to aspects of the hike.

I greatly enjoyed the hike and learned a lot about the history of the area. Cynthia has great info to share and we had a wonderful time talking about life in general.
