You can read this article in German, French, Italian, or English.

This article provides specific information about local laws that apply to people who host their homes in Zurich. Just like our country article for Switzerland, it’s your responsibility to verify and comply with any obligations that apply to you as a host. This article can serve as a starting point or place you can come back to if you have questions but it isn’t exhaustive and it doesn’t constitute legal or tax advice. It’s a good idea to check to make sure laws and procedures are current.

Some of the laws that might affect you are complicated. Contact Zurich Tourism directly at +41 44 215 40 00 or consult another local authority, such as an attorney or tax professional, if you have questions.

City Tax

As of August 1, 2018, we automatically collect the cantonal City Tax and forward it to Zurich Tourismus on your behalf at the time of booking. Guests will be charged the City Tax of CHF 2.50 per person per night for bookings in the Canton of Zurich, which will be listed separately on their invoices and added to the total amount they pay.

Reporting obligation

Hosts are required to notify the Cantonal Zurich Police of any guests who stay within their accommodation. Check the legal basis for the reporting obligation for more info.
