Did you know that you can host a yurt on Airbnb? Or a treehouse, a floating home, or even a geodesic dome? Thousands of people are already hosting unique stays—including a giant potato and a repurposed windmill—on Airbnb.

These one-of-a-kind properties are more than just a place to sleep. The accommodation is often the destination, and guests are seeking them out.

Our most popular unique stays include treehouses, tiny houses, tents, stationary campers/RVs, and farm stays. The number of guests who searched for unique stays on Airbnb globally more than doubled between the first 10 months of 2020 and the same period in 2018.

You can host a unique stay

Your house might be tiny or your treehouse lofty, but all you need is the space and vision. Many hosts say once the opportunity presents itself, it’s easy to get started.

In fact, the number of people hosting unique stays on Airbnb has risen dramatically in the past decade as people around the world discover that their tents, campers, and caves have a home on Airbnb. In 2019 alone, unique listings grew more than 40%.

Superhost Darrel of Atlanta used his eye for design to transform a tool shed into a tiny farmhouse. “I did all the work myself: the design, the textures, the colors,” he says. “Everything was thought out. I always try to find something I am passionate about, and this is it."

Superhosts Avner and Maskit of Willow, New York, envisioned building a treehouse for their kids to play in by the pond. But it quickly evolved into much more, and as they continued to invest in building the space, they saw the opportunity to share their passion project on Airbnb.

"Hosting on Airbnb is what makes it possible for us to afford it,” Avner says. “It still takes our breath away whenever we stay there.”

      Share what you love

Hosting a unique stay goes beyond welcoming guests. Not only are you sharing a physical space, but your own perspective on a landscape or lifestyle—be that living minimally, or in the treetops, or even among the goats.

Superhost Michael of Marfa, Texas, says the remoteness of his ranch allows guests to experience "the feeling of ancient warmth and culture." Most come to his glass-walled, solar-powered house to hike in Big Bend National Park, but decide to stay on the ranch.

“That tells me they got it: that experience of remoteness, reconnecting with the land, and a simplistic way of living,” Michael says. “That's been one of the beneficial things about hosting … having people begin to understand it."

That connection inspires Superhost Rebecca of Nashville when she shares her tiny house—and native garden—with guests. “It’s wonderful to feel part of something bigger,” she says. “We view ourselves not only as hosts but also as advocates for tiny houses."

      Transform an idea into earnings

Whether you already have a unique space or just an idea that has to be built or reimagined, a small initial investment could open up the financial flexibility to improve your lifestyle and pursue your passions.

“Hosting on Airbnb has given me the freedom and opportunity to be around and available for my young daughter,” says tiny house Superhost Genevieve of Portland, Oregon. “It has also afforded me the flexibility to work on more creative projects.”

Beyond paying for expenses and taxes, Superhost Porter of Saugerties, New York, says it’s “so much fun” to reinvest in the four shipping containers he’s repurposed in the Catskills Mountains. “We’re building new cabins, new roads, a sauna, hiking trails, and horseshoe pits,” he says.

How you host is up to you

By hosting a unique stay on Airbnb, you can tap into a global community of guests while controlling everything from pricing and availability to house rules and guest interactions. And it’s free to create and publish a listing.

Superhost Katie of Bend, Oregon, says that hosting her tiny house brings flexibility and purpose, two things she cherishes as a stay-at-home mom: “The biggest benefit of hosting on Airbnb [is that] I'm allowed that flexibility to do a quick cleaning during nap time, and just have a little more purpose in my life.”
