Fejn se tkun

Saint-Denis-Catus, Occitanie, Franza

What to do –just a few suggestions (based on what we love to do!)

Catus - Less than 10 minutes drive from the house is the charming village of Catus. Here you will find everything you need: mini supermarket & petrol (Spar), tourism office, boulangerie/patisserie, bar-tabac, post office, pizzeria, restaurant etc and even a local produce market one morning per week.
There is a charming walk along the river and an interesting little village cemetery opposite the post office.
Just beyond the village is the Catus lake (Lac Vert), a small lake offering pedalos, canoes, playground, bar & ice-creams during the summer season. A great place for everyone to relax with a picnic or dine at the restaurant.

Restaurant Mourgues, Peyrilles – Lovely restaurant serving regional food.
Tel: 05 65 31 01 05

Cahors - This is the big town of the area. There is a medieval bridge, Pont Valentre, and Cathédrale St-Étienne (Cahors Cathedral), where you will find the local produce market. There is often a bric-a-brac/antique market found in the central square near the Tourism Office on a Saturday. (First and third Saturday of the month). It is lovely to spend a morning at the markets and walking through the old town. Boat trips are also available. The big supermarkets are found just outside Cahors. Approximately 25 minutes drive.

St Cirq Lapopie - Less than an hour’s drive away, this small medieval village is a wonderful outing. It offers stunning views along the river valley from the citadel, winding narrow streets, interesting craft shops, cafes and restaurants. (Combines well with the nearby boat trip along the river from Bouzies , or the mini trains at St Gery.)

Boat trip from Bouziès - There is a very scenic boat trip departing from Bouziès and travelling along as far as St Cirq Lapopie. It is necessary to book. Arrive early and have a picnic by the river. (About 10 minutes from St Cirq by car). Les Croisieres de Saint Cirq Lapopie
Tel: 05 65 31 72 25

Grotte du Pech Merle (Prehistoric Cave paintings) - Only 35 km away , these caves are worth a visit. Here you find authentic prehistoric cave paintings which are over 20 000 years old. Particularly well-known are the famous spotted horse paintings.

Chemin de fer - steam train at Martel - 8km of fantastic scenery, and an attractive village square with decent places for a lunch. Check details online and book. Less than an hour away.
Tel: 05 65 37 35 81

Mémorail - Quercy Vapeur at Saint Géry - Mini train and small train museum. The small children love this. St Gery is just 15 minutes before St Cirq Lapopie so combines well as an outing.

Rocamadour – medieval village built up a cliff - +/- 1 hour– probably the top highlight of the region.
This is a breath-taking village - popular with tourists and pilgrims. It is one of the Grand Sites of France and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The narrow stone streets of fascinating little shops offer a wonderful range of craft shops, gifts and unusual locally made souvenirs, jewellery, handbags, liquors, toys and crafts. We are always delighted with the variety and surprisingly reasonable prices. (Look out for the shop that sells the witches that cackle when you clap!) The “Grand Escalier” takes you up to the sanctuaries/chapels above the village. There is a regular mini “train” that will drive people from the lower parking area up to the village, and from there it is possible to take a lift if you do not want to climb the stairs to the top.

La Forêt des Singes - A park where about 150 macaques monkeys roam free in a forest environment. (Can be combined with a trip to Rocamadour).

Canoeing – excellent canoeing for the whole family at La Roque-Gageac
Tel: 05 53 29 58 50

Morning markets - There are many of beautiful little villages, each with their own market day. Catus is the most local – with great cheeses, fruit & veg and a delicious paella if you get there early enough. Cahors market on a Saturday morning is the biggest in the area and offers more than just the fresh produce and snacks – including regional table cloths, clothes etc

Fetes - Keep your eyes open for posters as you drive through the local villages. There is often something going in a nearby village – from the long tables of a duck feast to the huge bonfire night of the feu de la Saint-Jean. A great opportunity to mingle with the locals and expats, these events are generally inexpensive and can be the highlight of the holiday. Village meal festivals have to be booked in advance, with informal fetes offering the opportunity to just pitch up and buy sausages, wine and cakes etc.

Wine tasting - There are many wine estates with beautiful chateau or roadside wine tasting places. Many of which are free.

Vide Grenier /Brocante markets (antique/bric-a- brac) - Look out for the posters . These are basically antique/junk markets. It can be good fun to browse among the interesting knick-knacks for sale, and there is usually a stall selling wine, beer and snacks.
