Discover the West

The west of Ireland has so much to offer and here you are right in the middle of it all. From Castlebar to Ballina, Wesport and further on to Galway or Sligo there is so much to discover you may need more time.

So to help you decide what best suits your schedule here are a few suggestions:

• A short drive to Foxford for lunch at the woollen mills followed by a tour of the mills. Come back through Castlebar for some shopping. Castlebar offers a number of high street shops and local tourist ones too.

• Take the road out to Sligo, choose from the coastal road or the main road. Some fantastic photo moments along the coastal road but it can be a bit windy. Watch the surfers as you pass and stop in Strandhill for some lunch. Head on up to Sligo for a look around the busy shops, restaurants and bars.

• The Ceide Fields in Ballycastle are the oldest known field systems in the world – over half a millennia old – and they have a visitor centre there – enjoy!

• Croagh Patrick is where Ireland’s patron saint fasted for 40 days in 441AD, and is said to have performed his snake banishing act. A great location for a walk.

• Achill Island is a stunning spot on the edge of Western Europe bursting with history and awe-inspiring sights. Achill is well worth the visit, and make sure you go to Keel beach.

• And if all that wasn’t enough, there’s an abundances of charming villages to visit from beautifully situated Westport (make sure to visit Westport House) to the peaceful town of Cong (call into Ashford Castle).
