L-ispazju
This home is situated in a traditional, aesthetically pleasing setting in a beautiful area known locally as the Valley. It is close to Lord Baltimore's Colony of Avalon Archeological Site (known to locals as the Dig), and within walking distance of The East Coast Trail. It's quiet peaceful setting is in clear view of the famous fishing grounds of Ferryland where, often huge icebergs and humpback whales visit. The O'Keefe Property is easily viewed as well from the main road Baltimore Drive. Look for the yellow bike near the Root cellar. The open space in front of the house has a commanding view of the Downs, the islands off Ferryland and looks directly out over the Eastern Horizon.
Valentine O'Keefe, obtained the property in the Valley, was a native of Tipperary, Ireland, born 1792 and came here as a young man in early 1800's. He was an exceptional shipwright. His son Thomas built the house and also built coffins as well as furniture for local residents. Many Irish traditions were passed on in this house. Music, songs, stories and dance were important in the O'Keefe house. The family were well known for humor, storytelling, kindness, fun, singing, music and their ability to entertain. Thomas was an excellent fiddle and accordion player and a jewel for storytelling. These gifts have been passed on to his sons, grandchildren and great grandchildren. The home was also a focal point for running moonshine for recreational purposes and many a good time was had. Several weddings including my parents Jimmy and Dollie O'Keefe took place in the house. People lived and loved in this special house. The last four brothers to live in the house were my uncles and legends in the community. Valentine fondly known as Tine served in the Forestry Unit in the 2nd World War and was affectionately known for his kindness and storytelling. Albert was a quiet witty man who served his county in the Royal Navy and was injured. He was patient and kind and lived a long life and was the last man to occupy the house. Leo was strong and special and had a unique personality. He loved reading and poetry. Harold was funny and an exceptional singer and had a wonderful memory for songs and stories. Some pics of these folks are on display in this home. Very special people lived here and restoring this house was a labor of Love and a dream for me and my family. It was restored by local carpenters. We are very thankful to anyone and everyone who helped and were part of the restoration. The property is a physical reminder of the traditional family based economy that existed for centuries in rural Newfoundland and Labrador. A fishing crew led by the family patriarch was at the core of the economy. All sons fished and farmed the land and had houses built close together. The cellar on the property remains a testament to this lifestyle and was used up until a few years ago. Our hope is to restore the gardens and use the cellar once again for our guests to access. The original rhubarb crop is still productive to this day.
The O'Keefe property is easily identified by community residents and is a rarity on the community's landscape as it is one of the few intact residences remaining not only in Ferryland but in the greater region of the Southern Shore. It has been occupied by the O'Keefe family for 5 generations and is of great cultural and historical value to the community of Ferryland, the Southern Shore and the province of Newfoundland and Labrador and has been awarded municipal heritage status. You will know you are staying somewhere very special when you decide to stay here. As a 5th generation O'Keefe, I will be delighted to share our home, our history and our stories and songs with you and make you feel very welcome. Ask me about Rhonda's Rambling Tours and if available we will customize a community tour for you and your group. Looking forward to seeing you in the Valley in Ferryland and showing you our community through the eyes of a local.

Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, il-Kanada

Ferryland is a gorgeous, historic town in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada with many attractions and experiences, lovely scenery and wonderful, creative, talented people. The community of Ferryland is part of a cluster of coastal communities along The Irish Loop on the Avalon Peninsula. The East Coast Trail runs through this community and world famous Colony of Avalon Archeological Site and Lighthouse Picnics are nearby. We have a beautiful Historic gothic style stone church build in 1853 called Holy Trinity and a local community museum that was once a courthouse and bank. Ferryland Historic Museum and church are both open daily in the summer season and you will learn so much about our people and our way of life by visiting them. The first English speaking Catholic mass in North America was celebrated in Ferryland and every Sunday mass is still held at 11:00 am. Both are worth exploring and in walking distance from the Valley House. Local artisans work can be found many places in this creative region such as Colony of Avalon gift shop and Merry Meeting Art shop in Renews. Whale and iceberg watching , puffin kayak and eco tours are available close by. Most brochures of local operators are available at the Valley House. Witless bay just 35 minutes away is home to the largest Atlantic Puffin colony in North America and many other seabirds. We have over 22 species of whales including humpback and minkie whales and most years many magnificent icebergs drift and are grounded all along our coastlines and bays. The Irish Loop is a spectacular place to watch the whales feed on capelin, krill and squid along our coast or to go iceberg chasing. Fresh berries are everywhere and wild flowers are in abundance all along our trails and lanes. We also have a new UNESCO world heritage site just 45 minutes away called Mistaken Point where you will discover the oldest multi cellular life on the planet called Ediacaran fossils. Close by is The Cape Race Lighthouse ( where the first distress signal was received from The HMS Titanic at The Myrick Interpretation Center. Cape St. Mary's ecological reserve is 2 hours away and home to one of the largest seabird colonies in North America. Every community along our coastlines has a charm and a story to tell. You will love the stories and the people you will meet. Our Artisans work is very beautiful and the creativity of our people is evident in their creations.
The Valley House is proud to display and sell local works such as hooked rugs by Carol Ann O'Neill, art by Debbie Barnable, wood work by David Hynes, mummers by Marie Williams, a line of Iceberg Alley bath products and Jams and so much more. So much to experience you will want to stay longer. We look forward to your visit. Come to Ferryland and discover this beautiful place.
