Our 1840s farmhouse sits on 2 quiet acres. I'm an Architect/Carpenter and built this studio apartment for my MIL (for someday). The GreatRm/Kitchen has 9-1/2' ceilings and lots of granite, stainless, kitchenware, and an eat-at bar – in a space filled with bright morning sun. The bedroom alcove provides a comfy queen and the shower/laundry room is serene. Whether it's function afflictions, family affections, or reflecting with friends... you'll find favor, fancy, and fun in our heart-filled flat.

L-ispazju
I love to design and I love to build. Since we bought this property some 20 years ago I've worked to renovate many of its parts – our living space, the barn, the garage/shop building, even the driveway, landscape, and parking area. Although the apartment isn't especially large one of my goals was to make it as livable, interesting, and accommodating as possible. (Like food I think, living space should be enjoyable and comforting... and contain a little spice.)

As a designer/builder I'm both detail-oriented and good with my hands – helpful traits when designing and building inside limited quarters using re-purposed farm junk. To make the apartment feel more spacious I incorporated a few unconventional design ideas... which is why the great room, bed alcove, and bath/laundry rooms are all on different levels – and why the wall between the kitchen and bed alcove doesn't go up to the ceiling, nor is there a bedroom door... all solutions that add significantly to an expanded sense of openness, size, and separation... and ideas that also make the space work better.

The dark wood comes from our 100 year old tobacco barn salvaged during renovation. The light wood, Sitka Spruce, comes from a friend who renovates beautiful but worn-out pianos. The variety of colors, textures, and age make for many beautiful contrasts. There are also lots of hidden 'tricks' and other one-off features – like the 'curving' closet doors, the brick & well-pulley beam, and the c. 1910 Frankenstein switch.... all from salvage.

While making the apartment practical and livable, my intention was also to convey a sense of New England farm living in a modern space. I hope you agree I've accomplished this. Please stay and enjoy this farm's not-forgotten history. – Brian

Please stop in front of the garage to drop your things then move your car to the parking area which is to the L of the garage – down a little hill. Near our front door and primary chimney (which face the garage) is a wooden walkway leading to the apartment. There's no regular check-in/out procedure, and since you'll be given the door keycode in advance, you can come and go anytime.

Two queen air mattresses can be set up in the primary living area with just enough room for everyone. The mattresses are double-thick – almost the same height as a regular bed – and very comfortable. The internal pumps make setup easy – just flip the switch to fill – reverse to flatten. And everything to make up the beds are stored in the entry closet. If using only one mattress (see photo) there's enough room that it could remain in-place during your stay.

We can actually sleep a 7th person. Here are the two options:
1. For an adult we have one twin air mattress that can be set up in the kitchen – squeezed in between the fridge and stove – tight yes, but it works.
2. For a child there's a special sleeping space... in a pull-out drawer (not kidding). I built three large storage drawers and the one behind the desk is about the size of a twin bed. It's outfitted with a camping-type air pad 'mattress' and sports a bright purple sleeping bag. This is a sleeping space kids fight over... speaking from experience.

We’re located about 20 minutes south of Bradley International Airport (BDL) and about 20 minutes north of Hartford. We live close to access to/from I-291 which feeds I-91 about three miles to the west and I-84 about 2 miles to the east.

We live in a quiet residential neighborhood. About a mile to the west is the Connect River with free access for kayak/canoe and there's even a free public boat launch. About a mile to the east is lots of shopping and things to do. There's an up-scale outdoor mall, a mid-scale indoor mall, various strip malls and lots of independent and franchise businesses, including restaurants. Within a five minute drive is Italian, Chinese, Mexican, Indian, Greek, Thai, and more... and a few deliver. We're in the suburbs with farms and housing around us but still close to most everything (and as I said, Hartford is only 20 minutes away for plays, sporting events, concerts, historical sites, etc. BTW, on a winter's night we can see the Hartford skyline from our kitchen window).
