Light filled house in the heart of this beautiful artists, artisan and fishing village with a large garden and large sunny lounge surrounded by the sublime North Yorkshire Moors National Park. With warm hearts we invite all generations to share this space for lasting happy and magical memories. It was once the home and studio of the renowned photographer and artist Henry Charles Morley and is now "the other home" of "Dolphin Man" Dr Horace Dobbs author and pioneer underwater photographer.

If you were to create a tick box list of things for your perfect seaside holiday you would doubtless include picturesque village, lovely beach, great pubs and cafés, stunning countryside, ice cream and fish and chips. Staithes has all of this but it has something special that is almost indefinable. Perhaps it is that is populated with true artists and artisans. Perhaps because it is a real fishing village. Perhaps because it was the home of a famous Victorian artistic and photographic set. Perhaps it's just the kindness of the people. Perhaps it is because the great explorer Captain Cook apprenticed here. Perhaps it is because it is like a womb that embraces all those fortunate enough to stay here. Whatever it is we travelled the coastline of Britain looking for such a magical place and found it in Staithes.

We stumbled across this house by a series of serendipitous coincidences. There were all kinds of things that made us love the place from the start. Maybe it was because it was formerly the studio of Henry Charles Morley, one of the famous Whitby set who pioneered action photography in Victorian times and has been one of my photographic heroes since I began photography in my teens. It might also have been the famous illusionist's painting on the wall, reminding us of the abundance of fossils on the foreshore. But I guess most of all, it was the lovely sunny lounge with elevated views across the town and huge garden letting in light from all angles.

We have led charmed lives and have had great adventures and we want the Photographers House to be a place where our guests not only enjoy lovely accommodation in an exceptionally beautiful seaside location; we want it to be a place where people have memorable happy adventures.

We hope your holiday here will bring out the creative in you. We will do everything we can to help you create your happiest memories. This is a happy place with a lovely ambience that we invite you to share.

The house has had a lovely makeover. This includes in a shiny new kitchen with Bosch appliances and a unique glass splash-back with the artwork of local artist Bridget Wilkinson. There is also a new shower-room with a large walk-in shower. This has two shower-heads so two can shower at once. Both the shower-room and the bathroom have extra long sinks. The new patio has a romantic circular bed/seating with awning. We have put our heart and soul into making this a special place. It’s a place to make you smile with liberty seaside fabrics, hand-painted tiles and some of the original artwork from the Dilo the Dolphin books. We have also added a porch made from an old local fishing boat.

The village is split into two halves. In the top half there is a co-operative supermarket, charming "corner store" in a terrace, beauty salon and a fish and chip shop. The pretty bit is in the the lower part of the village where you will find a wonderful delicatessen selling artisan bread, great pubs, a sweet shop, several great café's a heritage museum, lifeboat station, harbour wall, boats for fishing trips and whale and dolphin watching trips (these are also available from Whitby). Robin Petch, the Skipper of Whitby Whale Watching, is a good friend and fellow lecturer of Dr Horace Dobbs. Robin helps to run the International Dolphin Watch setup by Horace. Horace reckons the best fish and chips in the world is at the Cod & Lobster Pub. It's certainly a great environment to eat seafood overlooking the harbour.

The accommodation comprises the kitchen with fan cooker, ceramic hob, full size dishwasher, washing machine, dryer and tall fridge freezer half of which is the frozen compartment. The kitchen includes a dining area with a circular table. There are additional large pans and extra crockery for big dinners and tea parties.

Leading off the kitchen on the ground floor is a bedroom that can either accommodate two singles or a superking size double bed formed form the two single beds. The bi-fold doors between the kitchen and the bedroom can be folded back to make a second lounge or extra large dining room (great for Christmas).

Also leading off the kitchen on the ground floor is the new shower-room with wc and sink.

On the first floor is a large open plan lounge with natural light from three directions with a wood/coal burning stove. There are two double sofa beds in the lounge as well as armchairs and a further dining table. The windowsill contains 2 35mm cameras (Nikon F501 and Olympus) and a 5 x 4 plate camera with lenses and accessories. If you are a budding photographer and would like to experience celluloid, feel free to use these. Also on display are an early 8mm underwater camera and the 16mm clockwork movie camera of the to film the first British underwater documentary film shown and the BBC. (The film "Neptune's Needle" won an International Gold Medal)

The lounge leads onto the garden and sunny patio area. The bathroom with bath powerful deluge shower above the bath are also on the first floor.

On the second floor are two bedrooms with windows and roof-lights. One is a double bedroom and the other has two singles that can be made into a super king size double bed.

The garden is about 1/3 of an acre stretching behind three properties. It is very steep and terraced. We will be nurturing the garden over time into a perennial edible permaculture garden that we hope will provide lots of fruit, herbs and veges for the guests. This part of the garden is a little wild at the moment while it is being brought to its full glory. There are already 20 or more herbs just outside the kitchen that guests are most welcome to use. Most of the new trees planted come from the Agroforestry Research Trust. They include all sorts interesting edibles including; pineapple guava, red kiwi, buffalo blackcurrants, almonds, pecans, olives, heart shape cherries and vines. The garden has an abundance of young gooseberries and wild seakale.

Photographers House is positioned just above the rooftops of most of the lower village which has the advantage of getting a great deal more light and is also away from the busy thoroughfares. Immediately outside the lounge up a few steps is a nice sunny patio area surrounded by plants. The rest of the garden is only for the more adventurous and nimble! There are glimpses of the sea from the garden. At the top of the garden there is a secret hidden sun terrace that gets almost the full arc of the sun.

The town is exceptionally friendly towards dogs and is a paradise for them with many frolicking opportunities. They are welcome on both the beach and the main eateries year around. Photographers House has wooden floors throughout, making it ideal for woman's best friend!
