The Strawbale Bothy is made from simple, natural materials; wood, clay, straw and lime, there are no nasty chemicals, no concrete, and where we have had to use plastic, it is to an absolute minimum. A perfect place for two to slow down go for amazing walks, and watch the view.

L-ispazju
We’re sure you will love the feel of staying in a natural home, the softness of the clay plaster walls, the luminous light of the lime washed shower room and the warmth of local larch wood. There is a light and airy living area with an electric stove, Bluetooth speaker, books and games to keep you entertained if you ever get bored of the stunning views over to the hills of Knoydart. There is a small kitchen area with induction hob, combination microwave oven, washer dryer and all the other things you would expect to find.
In the bedroom you will find a cosy box bed, dressed with a duck down duvet, soft, relaxed French linen and Egyptian cotton. From your bed you can stare at the stars at night or watch the sunrise in the morning. You also have a spacious en suite shower room with standard flush toilet.

The Strawbale Bothy is exactly what it says, it is a loadbearing strawbale building built on foundations made from car tyres filled with rammed gravel.
We’ve tried to make sure this wee building has as low an impact on the planet as possible and built from natural, healthy materials. We have not used any concrete in its construction and practically everything can be recycled or is biodegradable. We intended it to be a plastic-free home, but while Covid-19 still circulates, we have had to introduce more plastic products for ease of disinfection to protect our guests, ourselves and our community.
You can still try plastic free showering with handmade soap and solid shampoo by local Scottish artisans and washing up those dishes with natural bristle brushes and cotton dish cloths.

Covid-19 Coronavirus:

The Bothy is frequently rated as 'sparkling clean', but we have introduced some additional, non environmentally friendly measures, just to make sure. This includes:
Deep cleaning and disinfecting with bleach based disinfectants and single use paper cloths after every guest.
Replacing vintage and handmade crockery and cutlery with dishwasher proof items - all crockery and cutlery goes through a hot wash in a dishwasher between guests. Replacing wooden chopping boards with plastic ones.
Washing bedlinen and towels at a higher temperature with biological powder.
Lining bins with single use plastic liners.
To cover the extra time, materials and PPE, we have had to introduce a small cleaning charge for each stay.

So, if you are curious about what it would be like to stay in a home made without concrete, bricks and plastic (usually), and stay on one of the most beautiful islands in the world, we would love to meet you.

Aċċess għall-klijenti
The bothy is all yours to enjoy.

Now, there are a few things you need to know before you book. There is nothing worse than a holiday you've been looking forward to that does not living up to expectations, so please read on.

Access: The bothy is down a very steep, rough and sometimes slippery track. This is not the place for high heels or anyone who is a little unsteady on their feet!

External landscaping: We plan to have decking to the front of the bothy, but this year, it is just rough ground, with a couple of seats to take in the fabulous view over the ‘undeveloped' garden to the sea and hills beyond. Parking is on the road.

Allergies: There is cosy duck down duvet on the bed, but if you would prefer a hypoallergenic one, please let me know when booking. There are also hens and a dog on the croft.

Internet, wifi and all that stuff: There is wifi in the bothy, but it is slow. You will find a range of board games, books, magazines, and of course, that view to watch.

The Bothy is in a small but lively crofting community. Feel free to wander down on the shore, along the rocky paths around the coast, or wander down to Isle Ornsay, past the lighthouse and maybe pop into the pub or sit outside and watch the boats and wildlife around the pretty pier. There is also a small gallery and a whisky tasting centre at the pier.
Our local community hub An Crubh (pronounced something like 'Un Croov'!) is just 2km away. It houses a fantastic shop and postoffice stocking lots of locally sourced fresh vegetables, home baking, and all the usual everyday basics. The Cafe at An Crubh is now open, and serves excellent breakfasts from 11 am - please check opening and socially distancing measures. Also on Friday and Saturdays they also provide a range of take away meals (I highly recommend the fish and chips).
There are plenty of stunning walks for all abilities within a matter of minutes from the Bothy.
Other attractions include Toravaig Distillery, Armadale Castle Gardens, Point of Sleat lighthouse, Duns Scaith Castle ruins, but please plan your visit and check opening times and social distancing measures.

Hello there. I was born in Edinburgh, and I moved to Skye over 8 years ago to begin crofting. Crofting is unique to the Highlands of Scotland. A croft is a small piece of land and crofting is often known as subsistence farming - very small scale, low impact and generally environmentally friendly form of farming. I have begun to clear the land, plant fruit, vegetables and trees. During the summer of 2015 and 2016 I hosted bed and breakfast guests in my own wee croft house. I had no idea what fun that would be, and have made some good friends along the way. For the last couple of years, my son and I have been building The Strawbale Bothy. I felt it was time to ‘put my money where my mouth is’ as they say, and see if it is possible to build a beautiful, functional home without the planet paying the cost. This has been a labour of love, and everything we did was new to us, from building with straw bales, to working with clay and cutting, shaping and finishing the beautiful live edge window ledges and shelves. When I’m not working, I love to spend time walking and exploring on Skye and the surrounding areas with my dog, Mia. So we know a lot of the ‘insider places’ that are not in the guide books, just ask us.

But if there is anything I can help you with during your stay, whether it is sharing some of my favourite places to visit, borrowing some wellies or maps, please just ask.
