Our lovely apartment is perfect for a romantic weekend, or a family beach holiday. On the site of the historic Sea Bathing Hospital, we are ideally placed for exploring the buzzing town of Margate, for the beach, and for scenic walks all along the beautiful Kent coast - whatever the time of year.

We have free on-site parking. On foot it's:

-2min to the beach
-15min to the Turner Gallery and Old Town
-12min to Dreamland
-7min to Margate station (1h 45m from London by train)
-4min to Tesco

L-ispazju
Our second floor apartment is easily accessible by lift or stairs. It is newly converted and decorated, with everything you might need for a comfortable stay.
Well insulated and centrally heated, our place is cosy and warm during the autumn and winter months, while in summer the big sash windows mean it is bright and airy
We have an open-plan living space with a fully equipped kitchen, a good-size dining table for sharing meals or working (we have Wi-fi), and a relaxing seating area.

We provide some breakfast items for short stays - bread, butter (individually packed) honey and jam (in little jars) - and milk to start you off (please let us know if you prefer non-dairy). We also provide kitchen basics such as teabags, coffee, salt and pepper, olive oil, washing up liquid and dishwasher tablets.
There is cupboard, fridge and freezer storage space for your food supplies - and we have a very useful Tesco only 4 minutes' walk away.

NB - Due to the recent coronavirus situation, we’re taking extra steps to clean and sanitize frequently touched surfaces between reservations. We also provide hand sanitizer, and extra cleaning materials for guests to use themselves during their stay, if they would like to.

There are two bedrooms, one with a king-size bed and the other with two singles. Both rooms have plenty of storage, and blackout curtains or blinds. Our bathroom has a full-sized bath with a shower and rain shower, a heated towel-rail, and hooks for hanging clothes and towels.

The apartment is suitable for children. We have children's cups, plates and cutlery; a high chair; a travel cot; a child's toilet seat and step, and a baby bath. We have buckets, spades, fishing nets, and a mat for the beach - and games and books for a rainy day.

We provide all bed-linen, towels and beach towels.

We use eco-friendly products for cleaning and laundry, wherever possible, and provide eco-friendly shower gel, hand soap and shampoo in the bathroom.

Aċċess għall-klijenti
The apartment is completely self-contained.

Affarijiet oħra li għandek tagħti kas
Both bedrooms face onto the main road and get the morning sun. We have blackout curtain linings in the large bedroom, and a blackout blind in the small bedroom. Occasionally a guest tells us that they notice traffic noise at night. Margate is a lively seaside town, and some traffic noise is inevitable - but our place is not in the town centre, and so we are well away from noisy pubs, clubs etc. (And we are on the second floor, so there is some distance from the road.) We provide earplugs for those guests who would like them
The living space faces onto the lovely old Sea Bathing Hospital, the courtyard and the car park. Being on the second floor the room is light and airy, and flooded with sunlight in the afternoon and evening.

Whatever the season, there is so much to see and do in Margate. Here are some of the highlights...

BEACHES

In less than two minutes we can be on the long sandy beach of Westbrook Bay. The beach is clean and safe for swimming, with many rock pools to explore at low tide. All year round, whatever the weather, we love evening walks along the beach and Westbrook Promenade; when the weather is favourable this is a perfect spot to watch the sun go down and enjoy one of Margate's famous sunsets.

It's less than ten minutes' walk to the popular Main Sands - in the holiday season full of classic seaside activities and treats, such as fun-fair rides, swings and trampolines, ice-cream and candy floss ...

A little further along the coast is the famous Walpole Bay tidal pool, for year round swimming.

Kent is home to many award-winning Blue Flag beaches.
A short drive or cycle ride along the coast in either direction will bring you to many such beautiful beaches - such as Botany Bay or Minnis Bay.

FOOD

A short walk along the promenade brings you to the famous Bus Cafe, which does great brunches, lunches, cakes and coffee. In the holiday season this is also the location of the Sun Deck - with street-food, a bar, and live DJs.

The area around the harbour and the Old Town is full of interesting places to eat. Favourites include BeBeached cafe on the Harbour Arm, GB Pizza and Peter's Fish Factory opposite the harbour, and the Cupcake Cafe in the Old Town.

OTHER PLACES TO VISIT

Cliftonville (up the hill from the Turner Gallery) is also a great place to explore for interesting cafes, vintage shops etc. We like the Grain Grocer on Northdown Road, for whole foods, and general eco things…

We love Haeckels on Cliff Terrace. They do amazing treatments, such as facials and massages, and sell their own candles and toiletries - all using locally sourced seaweeds and other natural products.

Margate hosts various farmers’ markets and food festivals throughout the year, so check online for details.

Quex Park in nearby Birchington has a wonderful farm shop, as well as a restaurant, garden centre and much more - see their website for full details.

ENTERTAINMENT

Dreamland is located across the road from the Main Sands. Originally a popular amusement park built in the 1870s, it was rejuvenated in 2015. The re-landscaped space now brings together vintage fairground rides, art installations, bars and street food and a host of music and other live events all year round.

The historic Theatre Royal and the Winter Gardens have year round programmes of plays, concerts, comedy and family entertainment.

ART

The wonderful Turner Contemporary Gallery, opened in 2011, has played a central role in the rejuvenation of Margate. With year round exhibitions and events, it is central to the town's vibrant cultural life. Last year the gallery hosted the Turner Prize exhibition.

Margate is now home to many artists, craftspeople and musicians, and the town contains many small galleries and other creative spaces, open to the public.

HISTORY

From its beginnings as a small fishing village, Margate grew in the 1700s and 1800s into one of England’s most fashionable seaside resorts. This is still apparent in the many historic buildings throughout the town. People flocked to Margate for entertainment, but also for the benefits to be had from fresh air and bathing in seawater.

Our apartment is in the former Nurses' Residence, on the site of the old Royal Sea Bathing Hospital - an impressive Grade II listed building constructed in the late 1700s.

The Old Town with its charming old streets and squares is now known for its antique and vintage shops, cafes, restaurants, music venues and galleries.
Other historic local sites include the Tudor House, the Margate Caves, and the mysterious Shell Grotto.

NB - Due to the coronavirus situation, many of the above places had to close temporarily in May and June. As of 3 July 2020 restrictions have eased, and some places have now re-opened or are planning to. Please check individual websites for details.
The beaches have remained open throughout!

Hi I'm Vivien. I live in London with my family, and our crazy chocolate Labrador. I work in education, and I love art and music, swimming and the seaside. My family and I fell in love with Margate last year, and were lucky enough to find an apartment in an ideal location near the town and the beach. Since then we've really enjoyed furnishing the space and making it our own. We love staying in our apartment at any time of year. It's wonderful to be able to drive here (or take a train), on a Friday evening after a busy week, and be walking on the beach in less than two hours. Being able to get away so easily, to such a beautiful and relaxing place, is an absolute joy - and a real stress-buster. One of my favourite things is taking a sunny (or rainy) walk along the promenade, to have brunch at the Bus Cafe, followed by a trip to the Turner Gallery. The occasional treatment or massage at Haeckel's, or a bike ride along the coast, soon restore my health and energy levels. A weekend in our comfy apartment, and out and about in Margate, is the perfect way to recharge my batteries. And a whole week is even better... We love our apartment, and we like to share it with family and friends. We want you to feel comfortable and relaxed, and hope you come to like Margate and the Kent Coast as much as we do.
