Javelina Hideout is a modern desert retreat located on 10 acres with expansive views. JH is an eco-friendly, off-grid home with rainwater harvesting that blends in beautifully with the stunning desert scenery. It is thoughtfully and sustainably designed to maximize comfort and enjoyment while minimizing the environmental impact.

The main house features a full kitchen and open concept dining and living area. The kitchen is equipped with an oven, gas range, and a full-sized refrigerator, but there is no dishwasher or microwave. Pots, pans and dishwares are provided for your convenience. There is no coffeemaker due to the limitations of our solar electric, but the stove will boil a pot of water very quickly and we provide a French press for your morning coffee. Propane wall heaters are offered in the main house and the bunkhouse. The main house has a mini split AC in the master bedroom that will cool the house in the summer; however, guests must be sensible about how and when they use the air conditioner. An instruction guide with summertime tips is provided at the rental. Using these sensible guidelines, it is possible to keep the house comfortable in the warmer months.

The master bedroom has a large east facing window for watching the sunrise from bed, and a high south facing windows for views. The room has a king memory foam mattress, ceiling fan, and a beautiful wood wall to frame your views. There is a comfortable rollaway TwinXL bed that can be used in the living room.

The bunkhouse is available for use with any booking, however extra cleaning fees apply. For parties above 3, the cleaning fee is a mandatory charge since the main house will only accommodate 3 people. It is ideal for guests wanting solitude away from the main house. It has 2 TwinXL bunks equipped with their own reading lamp and USB outlets for phone charging. Each bunk has screened, sliding windows at the head and foot of the bed for a cross breeze and views of the stars. It is not air conditioned, but does have a wall mount oscillating fan and a propane wall heater. It is passively designed for comfortable sleeping throughout most of the year, although in the summer months it can be warm for sleeping. An outdoor sink is provided for convenience. Bunk house guests can access the bathroom in the main house via an exterior door.

When the weather is too nice to be indoors, you can also cook outside on the gas grill or the charcoal park grill. Please bring your own charcoal.

Enjoy an evening campfire around the firepit out front (please bring your own firewood), or during a burn ban use the gas firepit located in the seating area out back.

Campsites are available upon special request if you need to accommodate a group over 5 people. Campers are required to bring all their own bedding and bath linens. (Additional $25 cleaning fee applies and there will be an additional charge of $10 per person per night for tent camping. This helps cover the cost of additional water usage).

Special request of our guests:
We do ask that our guests not use more than 10 gallons of our rainwater per day / per person. Please help us conserve our most valuable and precious resource in the desert - our water!

Please do not bring or use any electrical appliances that heat up - such as a blow dryer, curling iron, coffee maker, crock pot etc. These appliances will drain the solar battery bank and can possibly damage the system. Please conserve energy the same way you conserve water.

Standard rental is for the main house and all outdoor areas. Renters with more than 4 or 5 in their group will need to add the Bunk House. Smaller groups requiring/desiring extra space can add the Bunk House as an option. The only additional charge for the Bunk House is the $15 cleaning fee.

COVID-19 UPDATES: Brewster County (BBNP, Terlingua, Alpine & Marathon) is experiencing an extreme outbreak of COVID-19. As of 7/1/20, our infection rate is nearly 3X the state average and far exceeds the infection rate in any large city in Texas. Masks are required by law in any public setting in Brewster County. FULL REFUNDS for all COVID-19 related cancellations. Regardless of any restrictions or timelines on our normal cancellation policies, we have been, and will continue to, issue 100% refunds or credits for any reservation that is either cancelled or rescheduled due to concerns, closures, or travel restrictions related to COVID-19 or any future pandemic of similar proportion. We request that guests provide us as much advance notice as possible. We also request that guests consider rescheduling instead of cancelling or consider accepting a credit for a future stay. We are all in this together. We want our guests to make the safety of themselves, their family and community, and our family and community their highest priority when making or revising travel plans. CLEANING & DISINFECTING: We have always prided ourselves in providing clean accommodations. That commitment is now more important than ever. For the safety of our guests and staff, we are temporarily imposing a minimum of a two-day vacancy between all stays. That extra time between stays is being used for extensive cleaning and disinfecting, including disinfecting all commonly touched surfaces and laundering all linens. Additionally, the time between stays allows ample time for the vast majority of viral particles to break-down even before our staff enters the property to begin cleaning. Due to shortages, we request that guests provide their own disinfectants and masks for their own use during their stays. Regardless of any actions taken by us, it is impossible to guarantee a risk-free environment. All guests assume personal responsibility for their own travel decisions and their own health.
