The Fort of Nossa Senhora da Penha de França, or Flag, is the main preserved structure of the extensive process of fortification of the city of Lagos during the seventeenth century. Restored to National Independence in 1640, and reinstated the military government of the Algarve province in Lagos, constant harassment of the coast by pirates and privateers led to the construction of a network of coastal forts, the West and the East of the city. Many of them have disappeared already, or have been partially remodeled. This, however, remains practically unchanged, due to the excellence of its construction, due to the importance of its strategic position, but also due to its visual and scenographi

Probably built under the reign of King João V, it was built to serve as a place of worship for the military of Lagos, belonging to the military administration. Damaged in the 1755 earthquake, it was recovered in 1769 by order of Hugo Beaty, commander of the Lagos Infantry Regiment.
The Church is of Baroque traces, as can be seen from its main façade, containing a glass decorated with shells and a national shield with ramifications, Jesuit style. The exterior aspect of the Church is simple, with smooth stone walls.
