The black sand is amazing, but on a sunny day it's hot underfoot so be careful. The waves can be very strong so you need to be a confident swimmer. It's generally patrolled by Surf Lifeguards during the summer - swim between the flags.

Walking along the waterfront road (Tamaki Drive) from St Heliers Bay, through Kohimarama to Mission Bay takes about 25 minutes at a leisurely pace. Each offers a lovely beach front, good restaurants/bars, but Mission Bay is the largest of the three. It also has a lovely fountain which is lit up at night and a playground for the kids.
