About the Lake
Cagles Mill Lake—also known as Cagles Mill Reservoir and Cataract Lake—is located on two of central Indiana’s popular outdoor recreational sites: Lieber State Recreation Area and Cataract Falls State Recreation Area.
Cagles Mill Lake is located in Cataract, Indiana. It is a 1400-acre, man-made lake, and is also widely recognized for its natural beauty and waterfalls. The area surrounding Cagles Mill Lake is primarily forested land. Home to deer, wild turkeys, and much more native wildlife, this wooded area is perfect for properly permitted hunters and eager spectators.
The lake was created when Cagles Mill Dam was built across Mill Creek. In 1953, the Louisville District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers designed and constructed the dam, and they operate it today to prevent flooding in the Eel and White River Watersheds. The dam can be found at the north end of Cagles Mill Lake. It measures 150 feet high and 900 feet long. In other words, it’s quite a sight to see.
