If visiting Portsmouth and southsea, old Portsmouth is inbetween gunwharf quays and southsea beachfront. Hot walls as it is known is a very small piece of beach that is used by the locals for sunbathing in the middle of the day and is the closest beach to that part of Portsmouth. There are nice cafes there and pubs too, please see still and west pub on other recommendations

Hamble (le-Rice) on the outskirts of Southampton, lies along the River Hamble and is a quaint, picturesque village, boasting stunning views, period cottages, pretty walks and thriving wildlife.
During the summer months you will find the village bustling with people enjoying the fine selection of local pubs and restaurants. For a small village, there is a great selection of eateries which specialise in locally produced food, ale and specialist rum. Year round, people travel to eat in the village and it has fast become an alternative to city centre dining. From Thai and Italian cuisine to bistro and traditional pub fare, there is plenty of choice for visitors.

Set in the glorious countryside of the South Downs National Park, Petersfield is an ancient market town originally built as a Norman 'new town' at the end of the 11th Century. It is now a vibrant place for shopping and eating out.

The older part of southsea has many small shops, it’s quite an arty place. I particularly like ‘the garage lounge’ (however this is off the seafront and further in to southsea) please see in my food and drink recommendations. It’s worth walking from the ferry port, through ‘hot walls’ and up and along southsea beach (this is quite some distance), there’s a coffee shop called ‘the coffee cup’ and ‘the tenth hole’ is also near here for tea and a very nice slice of cake.
If you have children there is a pier long before you reach these cafes. I’d suggest looking on a map to see if you think this distance is manageable for you or your guests
