Food Scene

A restaurant with creative and locally sourced food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Her moussaka is incredible. Sun Salad will rock your world if it is in season. And you can't go wrong with a chocolate covered macaroon to end it all.

Might be the best burger in Alaska. A hole in the wall that churns out tasty burgers on tasty buns. His fries are great too. No regrets. *You can also order Chinese here- which is untested in our home but a nice option to have.

Whether you want a shorter hike along the creek or want to go the full 9 miles into the Gold Mint Glacier and camp overnight, this trail is a popular destination. The parking lot is open to camping (for a fee) and there are toilet facilities. In August and September, the hills west of the parking lot are good blueberry picking grounds.

The drive up to Independence Mine is beautiful itself and then when you get there, there is much to explore. In summer and winter you can walk trails and see placards next to old mining buildings explaining the history there. Gold Cord trail is an awesome summer hike. There are groomed trails in the winter for skiing and sledding as well as snow machining. The area is also a take off point for back country adventuring. The red A-frame Hatcher Pass Lodge offers food and drinks with views. You can continue up and over Hatcher Pass from here during the summer months- an incredible drive.

Feed reindeer from your hand and enjoy meeting a few other Alaskan animals on his short, family-friendly tour. There is minimal walking involved- you learn about reindeer and then go walk into the field where they are grazing. They are adorable and friendly and don't have teeth so they won't bite you!
