This is less than a ten minute stroll from the house. It’s an historic building as it was the first iron framed building in the world, so the forerunner of most skyscrapers! Now a visitor centre.

Located in the Quarry Park, by the river and a comfortable walk from the house the Dingle showcases why Shrewsbury is known as “the town of flowers”. Beautiful at any time of the year but especially in summer and in August for the famous Shrewsbury Flower Show. A lovely place to visit and sit quietly on the many lovely park benches.

From the house the river is a 10 minute walk. I recommend walking down to the weir at Castlefields (watch out for leaping salmon at the right time of year) then turn right and follow the river path. Under the English Bridge then into the Quarry Park. After the park you come to the Welsh Bridge then you can complete the circuit by following the river along Smithfield Road to the station then back to the house.

Shrewsbury is a great medieval market town. I moved here 30 years ago and hope never to leave. It’s just the right size of town to have a “small” feel but is large enough to have great bars, restaurants, theatres and other attractions.
Just spend a day walking the streets. Even pedestrianised Pride Hill where you have all the “chain shops” is fascinating if you look above the shops at the higher levels.
Walking from the house into town gives probably the best architectural experience; look back at the station then at the castle just before arriving at the library on your right ( Charles Darwin went to school here) with more beautiful old buildings opposite. Enjoy...

This ancient building used to be a school and Charles Darwin was educated here. His statue is in the grounds. Take a walk (or lift) to the top floor which houses the musical section and see the hundreds of inscriptions carved into the old school benches hundreds of years ago.

We have included this here mainly for its garden. Probably the nicest of any in Shrewsbury town centre. A great place to enjoy an alfresco drink. But also try The Olive Tree on Frankwell Island . A little further to walk but lovely. Also great tapas food at the Olive Tree.
