Sightseeing

Located in the historic district near Rainbow Row, White Point Gardens provides excellent views of the harbor while walking along the Battery. King Street and Meeting Street end/start at this park (depends on the direction you are coming from). Perfect time is late afternoon early evening. Bring a blanket and relax under the canopy of Oak trees while enjoying the ocean breeze. It’s a 15 minute bike ride or 45 minute walk from the house.

Every so often on a nice night I will grab some food to go from one of the nearby restaurants ( there is a good pizza by the slice place in the old city market five minutes from the customs house) and go to the backside of the customs house that faces the harbor and cruise ship dock. I walk up the stairs to the very top and spread out. I eat my take out and take in the view. Best at sunset, dusk, or in the evening.

John Olmsted designed Central Park and also Charleston’s designed Hampton Park. In the early 1900’s to the 1960’s Hampton Park had at one time or the other a worlds fair, a zoo, restaurants, racetrack, tea house, and bandstand. The old racetrack location still can be seen as it is located where the present day walking/running/biking path and street that loops around the whole park. The race track loop was a mile long. The old gates of the racetrack were relocated when the racetrack closed and the gates are located at the entrance of Belmont Park in New York. Hampton Park is also the site of the first Memorial Day celebration. This resulted after 257 Union Troops dying from exposure and disease as prisoners. Confederate troops hastily buried them in what is now known as Hampton Park. Twenty-eight African American Charleston residents came and re-buried the soldiers properly after this occurred. Afterwards they gathered to celebrate the 257 soldiers service. The union soldiers were moved again years later to Beaufort National Cemetery. The Park nowadays is excellent for relaxing, exercise, flowers, birdwatching, sunbathing, yoga, feeding ducks, hanging out with friends, and walking dogs.

Restaurants change every so often in here as a way to give food trucks and starting restaurants a temporary space. Great spot to eat and hang. Has outdoor and indoor space. The same architect designed the Chelsa Market in New York.

Love this place! Local tip if you go with a friend or partner be sure to get an app, and one to two main dishes to try and share. Sharing is the key since you get so much food. You will be stuffed and most likely will have some leftovers.

Shrimp po boys! Need I say more? Also I’m sharing secret local tip--On the weekends when I bike or walk by Leon’s on my way home I stop by Leon’s side service window. Their side window serves only soft serve ice cream with sprinkles in a cup or cone. Charleston is hot 10-11 months out of the year, so this is a nice cool perk on the way home.

Best paella! Plus for those who like to drive instead of walk or bike this restaurant has its own parking lot! I’ve been told that the building is the site of the oldest bar in Charleston. That the building used to be a pirate bar. I’m local but I’m not sure about the truth on that one. LOL!
