Hiking Information for Guests
Some hiking options for you-
It depends on how far and long you want to go. The big hikes will be crowded and take 5 hours, like Old Rag and White Oak Canyon. Both very famous hikes. You can just drop those names into maps as they are well known.
When I just want 3-4 quiet miles I take something called the Graves Mill trail, you won’t find it in any maps. If you drop this address into maps ‘1100 Graves Rd, Madison’ and follow the directions, when it says you are at the location just continue on the road a few hundred more yards and it dead ends at a small parking lot and trailhead. This trail will first follow the Rapidan River and is quite beautiful. A little less than a mile in you will have a trail branch left. If you take that another mile it follows an often roaring creek and some rapids, all uphill. It does end at a mountain top with a left turn near the end, but that is another 2.5 miles all uphill. Your other option is to not take the left trail and stay on Graves Mill. Trail and follow the river. You will have a couple small water crossings with creeks. You can just stay on this until you want to turn around
For a short option I suggest Cedar Mountain Battlefield. Just drop that into maps and it is an easy find from the house and your closest option. This small civil war battlefield can give you 1-2 miles of hiking and looking at historic stations. I often go here for an early morning moment of quiet. Just travel on the directions and as you turn into the battlefield you will come to a 90 degree left turn. To your right is a wooden gate. I just park on the gravel in front of the gate and go from there.
Hope this help, enjoy.
