A most unusual, narrow, out and back walk that hovers just above the river. Average balance and good shoes recommended. Come prepared for a dip in the river if it’s hot and the water level is gentle. It can be tricky for first timers to find so use the photos below as a guide. Find parking where you can near La Diff furniture store on 14th St, circled in photo (they do have their own pay lot). Cross 14th St at La Diff and walk toward the river, picking up foot path on the right, just before you reach the bridge. Cross railroad tracks and look left for trailhead entry and sign. Entry has a 5 rung ladder down to start trail.

In 1737, William Byrd II looked out over the James River into the surrounding woodlands and declared that he was reminded of his home upon the Thames, Richmond Hill, England. It was from this site, now Libbie Hill Park, that our Capital city was born and so named, hence its title, The view that named Richmond. Located 5 blocks from the Studio.

A former monastery with beautiful gardens. Check in at front desk for access. The library, chapel, and gardens are open to visitors every Tuesday through Saturday, and classes and retreats are available 12 months out of the year. Closed to retreats on Holy Days. There is anecdotal evidence that Richmond Hill, the highest hill in Richmond, has been a place of prayer for several millennia. Native Americans have confirmed this use of the hill when the land was still known as Tsenacomoco. The hill overlooks the Falls of the James and faces the setting sun. William Byrd II of Westover, granted the land by King James, commissioned Col. William Mayo to lay out a city on Richmond Hill in 1737. The survey lines of Byrd’s and Mayo’s city still form the legal boundaries of the property of Richmond Hill. Located on the crest of Church Hill, the city's highest point, Richmond Hill offers an island of peace and quiet in the heart of downtown Richmond. The Sisters of the Visitation of Monte Maria called it home for 120 years, beginning in 1866. Today Richmond Hill still serves as a place of prayer, and the ecumenical Christian residential community welcomes visitors for individual and groups retreats.l
