Another one of our faves in the 29 Palms area (15 min away) – and they also have live music, and a decent wine list. The food is also very good.

Best pizza in the desert. It’s definitely not classic, but there are big slices and the “David Bowie” is very yummy.

We love grabbing drinks and dinner here, especially after a long day hiking at the park. They usually have good music, and great service! (12 to 15 min from the cabin). The town of Twentynine Palms is the on the main thoroughfare between Joshua Tree and Las Vegas. There’s also an entrance to the National Park at Twentynine Palms, making it a popular stop over point after a day of hiking (or driving) through the desert. At the 29 Palms Inn, you’ll find family and pet-friendly accommodation in their purple bungalows. For those just making a pit stop, sit outside on the kitsch terrace overlooking the pool and sip on their signature seasonal cocktails.

While this may not be considered “local” (it’s a 35 minute drive), no trip to the desert is complete without paying a visit to Pappy’s. However, everyone knows this, so if you’re here on a weekend then eating here will take some serious strategizing. If you haven’t made a reservation, then we’d suggest getting there as early as possible to start writing (like 4-5pm). If there’s a big weekend show on, then you’ll want to buy a ticket beforehand (sometimes you can’t get in unless you have a ticket).

Places

If you visit Joshua Tree National Park, you should check out the following spots which are some of our favorites: • Chola Cactus Garden • Barker Dam • Hidden Valley Loop • Keys View: For sunset/sunrise • Ryan Mountain Trail (great view at the top – we like this as the first hike, but it is moderate level, not too easy) • Fortynine Palms Trail - less than 10 min from the house, and our second fav trail • Go Climbing: Cliffhanger Guides or Joshua Tree Uprising are the go to climbing guides

You’ve heard the hype, and it’s totally worth it. There’s really no better way to settle in to desert solitude than lying in a dome full of strangers while waves of sound via crystal bowls reverberate through your body. However, you do have to make a reservation well in advance, so if you didn’t get to it this time around, then we would highly suggest making it happen your next visit out.

In a luminous green disused photo processing booth five minutes from the National Park is the World Famous Crochet Museum. The tiny museum is the creation of artist and musician Shari Elf, and is stuffed with crocheted cuties she’s collected over the years including poodles, alligators, and unicorns. It’s open all year round; even if Elf isn’t there, the door is kept unlocked and visitors are free to drop by and take a peep at the cuddlies on display.

A converted retro gas station turned rod found goods spot. Look for “Big Josh”, their mascot. Also, we’d recommend buying some of the lovely Wonder Valley olive oil :)

This is our favorite wine shop in the desert (not a bar). They have an awesome selection of natural wine, craft beers, and rocks (duh). It’s open to 6pm, so make sure to hit it early – probably better to hit if you are coming into town from Palm Springs.
