Things to See and Do in the SF Bay Area

Sightseeing

The Bay Area is packed full of things to see and do! I say there are "10 top things" to see and do--look for listings that begin with [1 of Markus' TOP 10 Things to See and Do Around the SF Bay Area]
[One of Markus' TOP 10 Things to See and Do around the SF Bay Area] The best selfies are taken from Battery Spencer on a hill to the north and west of the bridge. You can use your smartphone's map apps to get there.

[1 of Markus' TOP 10 Things to See and Do in the SF Bay Area] This place is a tourist trap. You come for the smell of the sea, the fresh sourdough bread, the fresh seafood, the wild sea lions, the Ghirardelli chocolate, a Bay Cruise or trip to Alcatraz, and maybe a tour of a battleship. Everything else? Meh. Watch your wallets and valuables! Specific locations I recommend around the Wharf are listed here, too.

[1 of Markus' TOP 10 Things to See and Do in the SF Bay Area] [Also See Mt. Tam East Peak and West Ridgecrest Boulevard listings, plus Sol Food and The Buckeye Roadhouse, for food] Anyone coming for more than 2 days should visit Muir Woods, plus drive to the top of Mount Tamalpais (Muir Woods is located in a valley of this mountain), for a spectacular view (and hike, if you want it) of the entire Bay Area. Muir Woods is amazing. Be sure to look up when you walk around! When you see a dirt path off to the side, walk up one of them until you get above the tree line, then walk back down, for a more complete experience. Parking is challenging and by reservation. Use the government run website of the national park service.

Once you break out of the trees over Stinson Beach there is a small parking area, but you can also stop anywhere along the road. Take time to sit quietly and just be in the immense beauty of the hills and vast ocean before you. This location has been known to change lives, if you let it. There is a spirit in the mountain, and it will guide you if you listen quietly for long enough.

[1 of Markus' TOP 10 Things to See and Do in the SF Bay Area] The largest hands on science museum in North America! You could easily spend two full days here and not see and do everything this science museum has to offer. There is also a completely-in-the-dark walk/crawl/climb through experience that is amazing, and very worth doing, called the Tactile Dome. That experience usually requires reservations in advance. Visit the Exploratorium website for more info.

[Fisherman's Wharf] I don't really recommend Pier 39--it's a tourist trap--but you can walk down the left side of the pier to avoid all that . . . and at the end of the pier are (most times of the year) wild sea lions! This walk also affords great views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

[1 of Markus' TOP 10 Things to See and Do in the SF Bay Area] Actually, this is really at least 3 or 4 or more of the great things to do here. There are so many things to experience in the park. You can easily spend a day or even two around here. Attractions include the De Young Museum, the Conservatory of Flowers, the Botanical Gardens, the National AIDS Memorial Grove, the California Academy of Sciences, the Japanese Tea Garden, a Bison Paddock, Stow Lake Paddleboats, and more. Look for listings beginning with [Golden Gate Park] for details. ALSO visit the nearby historic Haight Street shopping district, where there is still a feel of the 1960s, AND when you are done at the end of the day wrap things up down at the Beach Chalet for a beer, good food and a view of the ocean (see my listing under Food)

Food scene

This is some of the best Chinese food San Francisco has to offer! Don't mind the decor or the so-so service--the food is excellent. They have a spicy sauce you can take home with you for $10. I personally recommend the Shrimp & String Beans and also the dumplings (when they have them). But anything on the menu is good, authentic recipes from Hunan province. Check hours before you go. There are also other Henry's Hunan's around the city, use your favorite search engine to find them.

[1 of the TOP 10 Things to See and Do in the SF Bay Area] Well, this one is actually a bit outside the Bay Area. It can take a good two hours to get there, and that isn't during Rush Hour. But if you have the time, it's beautiful and worth it. Look for my listings that begin with [Monterey], including the Monterey Bay Aquarium, 17 Mile Drive, historic Carmel-By-The-Sea, and Monterey Bay Kayaks.
