One of the biggest building sites is in Kalasatama. Helsinki natives have taken these empty plots that used to be filled with shipping containers as free space to build anything – so in the end of the Kalasatama wasteland there's Sompasauna - a guerrilla-style diy public sauna http://www.sompasauna.fi/

Gorgeous swimming pool from 1920's in the centre. Separate days for men and women. Has two options: getting a basic ticket 5,80€ where you can go swim and to a sauna. Or getting a small department for yourself upstairs, a robe and access to several different kinds of saunas (steam, infrared, wood burning). Thats 16€. Also a cafe upstairs.

Käpylä is the beautiful are where the apartment is located. The houses on this side of the street were build for the Helsinki Olympics in 1952. There were athletes staying in these flats. The opposite side of the street was build for the Olympics aswell in 1948 but the event was postponed due to the war.
Check out also Puu-Käpylä about 500m north, a area with wooden houses build in the 1920s. Pohjolankatu street has been chosen as the most beautifulstreet in Finland, several times.

No need to buy bottled water
Our tap water is very clean and hygienic (and, delicious), so you can just refill your own bottle. Only places where you can't drink tap water are boats and busses etc, and they will let you know if water is not drinkable. Most restaurants do not charge for tap water and it is common that its brought to the table without asking.

Bottles and cans have a deposit
Almost all bottles & cans you buy here, have a deposit of 0,1-0,4€. You get back when you return them. There is a machine in every food store which prints out a voucher for you - it reads the code in the bottle so do not crush the bottles.

Get a day ticket for public transport
Take a single ticket coming from the airport (its in a different zone).
Travelling within Helsinki you will need a AB-zone pass. I would suggest getting a HSL day pass, where you can travel without limits by bus, tram, metro, inner city trains and Suomenlinna ferry - up to 7 days.

Shopping for food and drinks
Most affordable shops are Lidl (nearest one in Pasila and Arabia). Also Prisma is good with prices and has wider selection. The nearest shop Alepa is not super expensive but has smaller selection.
Kesko group shops (K-market, K-supermarket etc) are usually most expensive, but K-supermarkets have amazing selection. S-group shops (Alepa, S-market, Prisma) are generally quite affordable.
You can only buy drinks with low alcohol (beer, cider, lonkero) in regular shops (before 21:00 / 9pm), wine and liquer are only sold in Alko shop (open weekdays until 21:00, sat until 18:00).
