A unique natural Area surrounds this pool, a collapsed grotto and canyon, formed by thousands of years of water erosion. Cultural remains date back to over 8,000 years. Many Indian tribes inhabited this area over the years, with the Comanches being the most recent. In the 1800s, the Reiner family from Germany purchased the property to raise cattle. Legend has it that their 8 year old son rediscovered the collapsed grotto. Ranchers, probably considered the grotto a safety hazard for cattle, but the Reimers realized its value as a recreational area and opened the property for public use. By the 1960s, and into the 1980s the Hamilton Pool’s popularity soared. Visitors packed the legendary swimming hole with few restrictions. The land began to suffer.
In 1980, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department cited Hamilton Pool as the most significant natural area in rural Travis County.
Hamilton Pool is a part of the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve.
