Wineries / Distilleries / Breweries

There are FAR too many excellent wineries/breweries/distilleries within the area to list here, so we’ve only included our favorites. Note that quite a few of the businesses listed in the following section are also very good restaurants in their own right and worth a visit.
Award Winning Whisky Distillery. Not a whisky drinker? Their Double Barrel Reserve, or better yet - Confederation Oak! - might just change your mind…

Any of their Rieslings are superb – try the Dolomite version if you like minerality to your wine (I do!). Also, The Indian Summer Late Harvest is a dessert (not ice) wine that is also truly wonderful.

Food scene

Like with the wineries, there are tonnes of fabulous restaurants about in our area. The following are some of our personal favorites – both casual and posh alike.
Special mention for a (primarily) take-out place that's close to the rental and very very good: the best Indian in the Region that I've had. The Indian Eggplant and Rogan Josh are our favorites and frequent our dinner table.

Casual-fine atmosphere serving wonderful charcuterie boards, salads, sharables, and flatbreads. But the real gem - their wine selection - loads of stuff you cant easily find elsewhere. Ask for a suggestion. You wont be disappointed.

An amazing little authentic Italian restaurant and grocerer with an adorable little patio of Grimsby;s main street. Pastas are made fresh in house. During the summer months they also often have a gelato cart out front for those looking for a cold treat.

Associated with Tawse, this restaurant is one of my favorites in the area. If they are offering it, their tasting menu is superb. They also run a live music series on their gorgeous and (huge) patio during the summer months. The pizzas available on the patio are especially superb!

One of the oldest and most prominent wineries in the region, Vineland Estates is on the pricier side of things, but well worth it if you enjoy god cuisine. If they are offering a sorbet made in-house – order it. You won’t be disappointed

Although I’ve mostly included Niagara-based restaurants on this list, Hamilton has a HUGE restaurant scene with some amazing places to visit. Among them is Berkley North which does tapas and oh, but do they ever do tapas. I’ve been here three now and am consistently looking for excuses to return.

Winery featuring two seasonal restaurants: The Oven (summer) is an outdoor-based venue featuring seasonal items and specializing in wood-oven pizzas; The Small Barn (winter) is small, cozy, and beckons back to an older time. Both are small areas so a reservation might be a good thing.

historical ghost town from the early 19th century turned conservation area. The park features the Ball’s Falls conservation center, which contains permanent and temporary galleries as well as information on the area’s cultural and natural history, as well as the original Ball family home, an operating gristmill, a lime kiln, a restored church, a blacksmith shop, and a carriage shed. The conservation area also has a lovely little walking trail and, of course, 2 waterfalls.

The Grimsby beach community was started in the 1850’s and, as the 'camp' became more permanent, cottages were built. Those cottages, known locally now as 'The Painted Ladies', and more generally as Victorian Gingerbread houses, are now year-round houses that are ornately decorated, colourfully painted (think vibrant blues, pinks and yellows) and meticulously maintained.

Weekends during the summer months can get very busy in the area and many places will book up a day or two (or more!) in advance. While there are lots of options and alternatives, if you have your heart set on a specific place on a specific day/time, make a reservation. This goes double during Covid as many places are not accepting walk-ins at all.
