This is in Newport and dishes up really fantastic food. Dress can be smartish. You must try the garden in summer. In winter the dining room is great, but the cellar bar gets our vote for a great place to have a drink and a fantastic meal.

This is a great find and one for the whole family. On the coast walk and beach at Pwllgwaelod (4 miles in the Newport Direction), this cosy restaurant serves fantastic local seafood (order the dressed crab when in season). There are great views from the tables outside overlooking the beach. In the winter join the locals for a yummy Sunday lunch. Best to book. (Very relaxed and casual dress code, popular with walkers and perfect for children/dogs too.)

Newport is the home of The Golden Lion and Llys Medic (both mentioned above) and if you take the sign for the “Parrog” this leads you down to the estuary side of the beach to the local Boat Club. On your way to Newport beach on the main road you pass the Golf Club, which also serves food with a great view across the fairways to the beach. There is also a super-cute small market on (the aptly named) Market Street in Newport on Monday mornings.

Here there is a small sandy beach which is very popular with families as it is a safe and dog friendly cove. There are parking and toilet facilities available and the Sailors’s Safety Pub/Restaurant. It is a good starting point for walking around Dinas Head itself with amazing 360 degree views from the top. For the less energetic there is a walk through on flat ground too to Cyn yr Eglwys. Ramp for boat launching.

It is a good starting point for walking around Dinas Head itself with amazing 360 degree views from the top. For the less energetic there is a walk through on flat ground too to Cyn yr Eglwys. This is just to the south of Cardigan. A huge expanse of sand alongside the Teifi River Estuary. Follow the signs for St Dogmaels as you approach Cardigan. There is parking and a café on the beach here. The coast path begins (or ends) here.

Also worth visiting are the beaches of AberMawr and AberBach, both a few miles in the direction of St Davids, south of Fishguard. Go at low tide and be the only people there in winter. Great seaweed picking, lovely pebbles! Parking in winter no problem, in summer go early or be prepared to walk as no formal parking area. There is a charming footpath to AberBach with artwork through the woods — just beautiful.

This is where the famous Red Bull Cliff Diving is hosted. From here you can walk to one of the best kept secrets of Pembrokeshire. Head north on the Coast Path to Traethllyfn – a huge expanse of sand overlooked by 150ft cliffs. (You can also reach the beach by walking from Porthgain Harbour or through Barry Island Farm.)

To the left of the beach there are some amazing rock pools and formations cut into the green slate. To the right there is a great view from the headland — or pop over to the secluded beach next door. Café and toilet facilities are available. No dogs allowed in the summer months.
The Dinas Arms is situated right on the 188 mile Costal Path. So the choice is yours. Locally (particularly for dog owners) there is a great walk along the river in Lower Town. Cross the stone bridge in the village and turn immediately left. The track continues along the river for miles. The Gwaun is a beautifully clear river, full of fish. Look out for the weir after about 300 yards. Also, after about 600 yards there is a small area to the left (as the path rises to the right) where you can sit, wade across or look for the ‘fairies’ that live in the overhanging trees.
Alternatively, cross the bridge, turn left if front of the Sea Cadets building (called the Skirmisher and the site of the Old Customs House). Follow the path up into Fishguard itself, or for a great view and good photo opportunities keep to the right and the track will follow the coast towards Goodwick.
It is hard to recommend one part of the coastal walk. Our advice would be to look at a map or guide book, select an area and get walking at a pace and distance to suit yourselves; In this folder we have supplied some print outs of local coastal walking routes, many of which are circular.
The local bus service is great and can be used to leave a car at one point and get a bus back to your start. The Strumble Shuttle runs from Fishguard south towards St Davids.
