Capitol Park

This park was the site of the Alabama Capitol when Tuscaloosa was the seat of state government from 1826-1846. In 1847 the capitol was moved to Montgomery, and the building became the home of the Alabama Central Female College. A visible reminder of the old capitol building that burned in 1923 is the stone foundation and two small columns.

Lake Lurleen State Park

Located nine miles northwest of Tuscaloosa and Northport, this 1,625-acre park is a scenic retreat set on the banks of Lake Lurleen and offers plenty of recreation and relaxation. Facilities include a modern campground, activity building, picnic areas, play areas, pavilions, a beach and bathhouse, fishing piers, RV storage, boat rentals and boat-launch areas.

Moundville Archaeological Park

The University of Alabama’s Moundville Archaeological Park is one of the nation’s premier Native American heritage sites. Called “The Big Apple of the 14th Century” by National Geographic, Moundville Archaeological Park was once the site of a powerful prehistoric community that, at its peak, was America’s largest city north of Mexico. Located on the Black Warrior River 13 miles south of Tuscaloosa, the park preserves 326 acres where, 800 years ago, Mississippian people constructed 29 massive flat-topped earthen mounds, arranged carefully around a vast central plaza. The mounds served as elevated platforms for civic and ceremonial structures and the homes of nobles. Today, the panoramic landscape provides stunning views of these ancient monuments while the park’s museum displays many of the beautiful treasures that have been unearthed at the site, including the famous stone Rattlesnake Disk. The park also features a half-mile nature trail, picnic areas, scenic views of the Black Warrior River, and a campground.

The Riverwalk is an excellent paved trail along the southern bank of the Black Warrior River near downtown Tuscaloosa. The path is divided by a painted line making a distinct two way road for walkers and bikers. Riverwalk Bridge There are a variety of park areas that are all dog friendly sprinkled along the trail. The pathway has plenty of benches, gazebos & hammock-friendly trees for quick breaks and picnics. The trail also provides a playground near the Public Library and a splash pad at the Bama Bell dock for the kids. The trail is well lighted with street lamps lining the trail. Though expanding, the present entire length is approximately 4.5 miles, starting at Capitol Park on the western end and ending at a gazebo on the East side of Manderson Landing. It is 4.2 miles if you start at the Amphitheater loop, where you can use the ample parking that venue offers.
