Near the headwaters of the San Antonio River lies shady Brackenridge park! The zoo is here too! It's a great zoo but can be a bit pricey.

A bit of a drive, but worth it for the raw Texas hill country nature. For the true intrepid hiker, I recommend the Bauer unit of this park (do not follow google maps if you go to the Bauer unit)
