Aldeburgh

Aldeburgh is a viberant town with three hotels, lots of food choices, many galleries and a charming cinema reminiscent of the old fasioned 'flea pits'. During the Aldeburgh festival and Summer months there can be free concerts on the beach. Historic houses worth visiting are: Moot Hall and Benjamin Britton's home, the Red House.
Interesting sea side town with delightful pier, home to a famous brewery: Adnams, a land mark light house and decorative beach huts. The beach is a mixture of sand and shingle. Good choice of restaurants, the Crown houses one of the best and pubs, don't miss the sailor's reading room and canons. If you walk down to the quay you can buy fresh fish and take a ferry across the river to Walberswick for a small charge.

A very curios little holiday, sea side village with a small green for teas and ice creams and a 'swallows and amazons' style boating lake. A walk along the beach up the coast from Aldeburgh.

Pleasant town with a tide Mill on the river, nice central square and church, and a good choice of pubs and restaurants. Also has a plush cinema which operates as a theatre over the Christmas period.

Lovely small town just four mile away from the cottage with a regular Saturday morning market, an ancient castle with beautiful views across the mere and a very lovely old church. Lots of places for coffees and meals, the best restaurant is Watson and Walpole.

Aldeburgh is a lovely seaside town with a mostly shingle beach. Benjamin Britten lived here in the Red House which is well worth a visit and is buried in the church yard with Peter Peers. Lots of restaurants The Lighthouse is considered the best, very good fish and chips, and galleries full of local artists work. There's a handsome church and quaint, old fashioned cinema all worth a visit. In the Summer months during the music festival a band stand is set up on the beach for lunch time concerts. There are several good hotels: The Brudenel at one end and The Wentworth at the other.

Neighbourhoods

Our small, charming village has a pub: The Crown where some scenes from 'Detectorists' where filmed and definitely worth supporting when it's open, an ancient church and White House Farm where exhibitions are often showing the works of local artists. There's a large children's playground behind the village hall in what is known as Butcher's Field and an electric car charging point. Great Glemham is home to the John Constable family, descendants of the famous artist, and the nearby village of Rendham is the home of Maggie Hambling who sculpted 'The Shell' on Aldeburgh beach. Rendham also has a popular pub: The White Horse and an interesting craft shop. Fresh farm eggs can be bought from Hall Farm, on the way to Saxmundham. 'Friday Street' along the A12 is good for strawberry and raspberry picking in season and has a shop full of local produce, including fish from local smokeries. Some Sunday mornings there's a car boot sale in the field opposite the Friday Street farm shop, always quite fun to wander around. The closest supermarkets are the Coop in Framlingham, and Tesco and Waitrose in Saxmundham. The area around the village is perfect for ramblers and cyclists with many footpaths criss-crossing through fields to nearby villages. There's easy access to a range of interesting and varied beaches by car. The village is approximately six miles from the Snape concert hall and ten miles from Aledburgh town and beach.

Sightseeing

Lovely concert venue by the river set among the reed beds. Good walks from here to Iken, smart craft shops, a tea room and good pub; catch a concert if you can. The Aldeburgh music festival is the middle two weeks of June annually and the 'proms' season is during August. Only six miles from my cottage.

Lovely sandy beach beyond the dunes and an attractive village with many literary and artistic connections; it's the venue of the annual crab catching competition. There's a nice village green and The Bell Inn is a good pub with a lovely garden. Lots of good walks and you can take a ferry across the river to Southwold harbour.

Nice straggly village to walk around with an ancient castle keep and excellent Inn, The Crown and Castle. From the harbour you can take boats to Orford Ness in season. There's a well known fish restaurant, a smokery and some interesting shops as well as good walks from here. Sadly the beautiful light house has been demolished.

Bramfield is a small village with a good pub serving locally sourced food: The Queen's Head, an interesting thatched church with separate round tower and a typical Suffolk wall (opposite the church).

If you enjoy walking along a beach with noone else in sight and only the sound of birds and waves this is the place for you. Parking is by and interesting church, rebuilt in the ruins of a much larger one and the footpath opposite leads down to the sea.
