Il-Lake Tahoe
Because - duh! It's Lake Tahoe.
Donner Lake has swimming, boating, a gorgeous backdrop, and it's just down the hill. At Donner State Park, at the east end of the lake, there is an interesting museum about the Donner Party and some early Truckee stuff.

Essentials
Seriously, go to Save Mart rather than Safeway for the basics, especially during the holidays or on weekends during ski season. Slightly smaller selection, but the crowds are way smaller during the holidays and the staff are always friendly and nice. Not the zoo scene of Safeway.
