Sitting below the Pass named by Major Mitchell when he led his expedition through the hills in 1836, the reservoir was built in 1868. It was fed from the Malmsbury - Bendigo water race, but now only gets water from Forest Creek. No longer used as a water supply it is a popular quiet recreational spot in the Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage Park, used for fishing, swimming, boating, walking, birdwatching and picnicking.
