An incredible moment in the history of the Chateau de Montal: the Mona Lisa painting was hidden there during World War II, from March 1943 to June 1945, along with hundreds of other paintings from the Louvre.

The Gouffre de Padirac is one of the largest chasms in Europe. Discovered by the famous French cave explorer Edouard Martel, it opened to the public in 1899, with over 24 million visitors to date.
An enormous 75 metre chasm, 33 metres wide, leads into a cave system, created by millennia of subterranean underground water erosion which has carved out spectacular caverns in the limestone, full of stalactites and stalagmites.
First you descend by lift or the metal staircase, whose design was inspired by the Eiffel tower, you then get onto small flat bottomed boats as your tour guide then punts along a subterranean river of pristine turquoise water, using a wooden pole to move you along. The cave system is 103 metres under the surface, with small passageways in the rock opening to amazingly large caves.

Along with Autoire and nearby Carennac, Loubressac is classified one of the 'Most Beautiful Villages of France'. Loubressac is set on a rocky outcrop and offers unparalleled panoramic views across the Bave and Cère Valleys as well as neighbouring castles like Chateau de Castelnau-Bretenoux.
Built of ochre stone and capped with pointed brown-tiled roofs, the charming medieval houses beautifully trim the village's cobbled streets, narrow alleyways and central square.

The Dordogne flows peacefully just below the village of Carennac, where there are a some great little cafés to relax and enjoy the view. The town was developed in the 11th century, although traces of human occupation date back to neolithic times. Built around a Romanesque church and cloister, many of the Renaissance houses have embellished windows. Carennac's most remarkable landmark is the church of Saint Pierre and its ornately carved portal. Incorporated after the church's construction, there are impressive carvings of Christ with the Book of Judgement and the 12 apostles.
Equally impressive is the adjoining half-Roman, half-Gothic cloister which was built following the Hundred Years War.

Just extraordinary... Lascaux, registered as a the World Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, is the finest of all prehistoric painted caves made by Cro Magnon man.
Discovered by 4 young boys on Sept 12, 1940, the Lascaux cave in Montignac is situated in the Vézère Valley in the Département of Dordogne-Périgord.
After the Second World War, Lascaux was open to the public until 1963, but the carbon dioxide soon began to damage the prehistoric paintings.
Today, the original Lascaux cave is closed, but Lascaux 4, an exact replica, is well worth the visit!
