Only less than 1 mile from the loft, the Elba fire tower is a historic location to visit.
Open daylight hours April through October, it is located in the town of Elba. It is a hike to get to the base of the tower—there are approximately 500 uneven steps—which might be a challenge for some. Built in 1936 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the tower soars 110 feet into the air. Just to get to the base of the tower you need to climb approximately 600 steps.
The Elba fire tower was used regularly in the early years to detect fires. Today, the tower is used for recreation and education.

Sightseeing
Just 3 miles south of the loft is the historic Marnach house.
In 1857, Nicholas Majerus and John Marnach, who, along with their families, had emigrated from Rambrouch, Luxembourg, became the fifth owners of the land on which the Marnach House was built. The land, which had originally belonged to the Dakota Indians, is located near the town of Elba, MN, in the Whitewater Valley. The families were stone masons and farmers by trade. They began construction on the house in 1857 with the cellar; construction continued through four stages during 1857-1860. A wooden addition was completed in 1914. Built in the Luxembourg Quereinhuas style, the stone house has six rooms, each with a window facing south. The walls are two feet thick; a curved staircase leads from the kitchen to the second floor.

Whitewater State Park History
In 1917, in an effort to protect one of the most scenic portions
of the Whitewater Valley for future generations, southeast
Minnesota residents began to mobilize to establish Whitewater
State Park.
After an unsuccessful attempt that year by the state legislature
to appropriate funding for the park, L. A. Warming, local resident
and St. Charles newspaper editor, decided to put his
photography talents into action. Warming spent the following
year photographing the scenic landscapes and the visitors and
tourists of the Whitewater Valley. A copy of this book is located inside the loft for you.
