It was proclaimed a Royal Forest in 1079 by William the Conqueror, created for his royal deer hunt and is featured in the Domesday Book as Nova Foresta. Nearly 1,000 years later and it still retains its unspoilt mystery and romance. It became a National Park in 2005.
New Forest is synonymous with its native ponies and deer, who can be seen freely roaming and grazing the open heathland as well as happily wandering through the villages and hamlets.
Today its 145 square miles of undisturbed deciduous and coniferous forest provide excellent opportunities for nature watchers, walkers and riders alike.
