We have had some great meals at this relatively unknown Vietnamese fusion bistro. We especially liked their octopus salad. Really great. Terrific quiet ambience. Excellent location with ample parking.

Louisiana Lost Lands Environmental Tours
John is a guide who provides intensive kayak tours of the local swamps. Ask him about them or check out https://lostlandstours.org
One of the largest urban parks in the country. The park was first established in 1854 with a mere 100 acres of swamp donated by John McDonogh. Additional acres were purchased or donated over the next 100 years, all reclaimed from a huge cypress swamp that stretched between what is presently City Park Avenue and Lake Pontchartrain, on the city’s northern verge. The park is now 1300 acres, half again as large as Manhattan’s Central Park, and four times as large as its more gentrified uptown sibling, Audubon Park, which was also designed by the Olmsted family.

I love both of the large 19th-Century Ohlmstead-designed parks in New Orleans, but I spend more time in the uptown spot: Audubon Park. It has a two-mile paved walkway that circles the Magazine-Street-to-St. Charles-Avenue section of the park and I can be found there several afternoons each week walking the dog. It's lagoons and isles are roosting spots for an astonishing number of birds, and you can have a great time people watching on its allées of ancient live oaks, shelters, and playgrounds. Audubon Park is open to the public and also features tennis courts, riding stables, soccer fields, the Whitney Young Pool, Audubon Clubhouse Café and Audubon Golf Club.

If you want to get out into nature near New Orleans there is no better place to do it than the Barataria Preserve. Part of the Jean Lafitte National Park system, it has wonderful boardwalks through palmetto swamps and bayous. Wildlife is abundant and wonderful to see.
