Bushwalks / hikes

This walk is nearly 13km return (out and back) and you'll find spectacular views at the end. You can just walk out to the Neck Beach if you don't have much time - this is still a really pretty walk, and only about 5km return. If you go at low tide, you can do part of the walk along the beach. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/australia/tasmania/cape-queen-elizabeth-track

This is a spectacular walk, but not for the faint-hearted. It is quite steep in parts, and the path runs quite close to a very large cliff at times - not for those afraid of heights! It starts at the end of the beach by the Pennicott tour centre, at the southern end of Adventure Bay. The Grassy Point walk starts at the same place, but is an easy family friendly part of this walk that follows the coast out to Penguin Island. https://parks.tas.gov.au/explore-our-parks/south-bruny-national-park/fluted-cape

This is a lovely rainforesty walk along the ridge of Mount Mangana which has a lovely view at the end (although we haven't seen it - it was very foggy the day we went!). It is 3.7km and family friendly. This walk leaves from a small carpark at a high point on Coolangatta Rd. From our place, turn left from the driveway, then turn right at the intersection with Coolangatta Rd. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/australia/tasmania/mount-mangana-track

A pretty, relatively flat walk for those wanting a longer walk - 18k loop, or there is a shorter loop of 4.5k you can do. Leaves from near the Jetty Beach camp ground, on the way to the South Bruny light house. https://parks.tas.gov.au/explore-our-parks/south-bruny-national-park/labillardiere-peninsula

A pretty rainforest walk, 2km return. Pull your socks up - you're likely to cross paths with some leeches! Worth it though! The start of the walk and picnic spot are only a few minutes down Resolution Road from us - turn left from Birdsong, then continue on past the intersection with Coolangatta Road. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/australia/tasmania/mavista-nature-walk

Delicious honey and ice cream. A nice stop for the kids - there's a playground and nice outdoor seating spots. It's also opposite the start of the Cape Queen Elizabeth walking track, and just along the road from the air strip.

Beaches

Many access points, including across the road from the shop. Safe swimming. Dogs are allowed on-lead, and off-lead at times of the year when the birds are breeding - check the signs. The northern end has a lovely sheltered nook called "Quiet Corner" - great spot if it's a bit windy, there's also some shade.

A spectacular beach on the way out to the South Bruny lighthouse. There's a short, relatively steep, walk down to the beach from the road. Take care as this won't always be a safe swimming beach, but worth checking out.

There's a small car park and picnic tables here. The point is a nice spot for pottering in the rock pools, and it's a lovely beach for a swim or stroll.

Our favourite beach in the bay is Hansson's beach. It's the first beach you get to if you come in from Adventure Bay road. From Birdsong, turn left from the driveway, then turn left onto Coolangatta Road, and left again onto the main road. The carpark is about 3 minutes along, just before you go up the big hill (the first car park you'll see is Two Tree Point). Hansson's often has good boogie boarding waves. Dogs are allowed here on-lead, and off-lead out of bird-breading season (check the signs). When the tide is low, there are great rock pools to explore if you head left when you get onto the beach.

Tours

If feel like a treat, this is a spectacular way to see Bruny, and some spectacular coastline that is otherwise very tricky to see! The airstrip is not far past Great Bay, on the left. You can't miss it!

Sightseeing

The Neck beach and Truganini Lookout are definitely worth a stop. The beach can have good surf, but take care swimming as it's not always safe. Fairy penguins can also be spotted here after dark - make sure you don't go onto the beach after dark and always stick to the marked tracks when accessing the beach. If you do go to see the penguins, take care not to scare the penguins and use red light when spotting them. An interesting visit and spectacular views. A lot of it the road to get here is unsealed, but well-maintained. Turn right at Lunawanna, and keep going til you get to the bottom! Do stop at Mabel Bay for a look on the way- it's pretty! You can book a tour of the lighthouse here: https://www.capebrunylighthouse.com/
