Hiking

A popular hike about 45 minutes from the rental house. One of my favorite nearby hikes. A strenuous hike for some, but the views are worth it!

Actually not called “Slaughter Ridge Road,” but it was only way I could enter this hike on Airbnb. It’s just “Slaughter Ridge” and starts at the end of Stetson Circle in Cooper Landing (about an hour from rental house). Amazing views of Kenai Lake/river. A very popular hike. But go in the evening or during the week and you may be the only one(s) up there!

The Skilak Lake Road area has a lot of sight seeing and hiking options. You can regularly see bears along the road. The Skilak Lookout trail (pictured above) is one of the popular hikes in the area. Kenai River trail is a long but easy trail near the river. Hideout trail is a steep but shorter hike with a great view at the top. There are other hikes in the area - just check the AllTrails app. As I said earlier, it’s a popular spot for bear viewing (from inside your vehicle!), but if you make plenty of noise on your hike, they should stay away. Always bring bear spray and do some research on proper safety around bears. Don’t let the idea of bears scare you off and keep you from hiking! I do tons of hiking and rarely ever see bears when I make my presence known. Bear attacks are quite rare!

Food scene

Great food, great owners (my MMA coach and his family own this place). Very popular spot for drinks and food.

Self-defense

If you train Jiu Jitsu or are looking to start, Redemption is a great gym. I’ve been training there for years and also do the photography for the gym. Family friendly, female friendly, free drop-ins.
