Neighborhoods

The Duck Pond neighborhood-just east of us (Pleasant Street) is home to the nicer old homes is Gainesville. Many sit on the historic register. Lots of these are old Victorian style and have bees turned into multi unit apartments, but still maintain the character that the neighborhoods originally possessed.

Pleasant Street - where you are staying - is a complete mix of old homes built by former slaves (and inhabited by the same families for generations) and new construction - like the houses you will see directly across the street from you. Many of the families that had lived here for so long have finally moved away leaving a lot of old cracker-style houses perfect for college rentals. There are many historic churches and performance halls from the Jim Crow era still standing.

Things To See

On the NW corner of the intersection of this street (NW 4th St and NW 8th Ave) is an Osprey Pole that has the nest of a family that has used the same nesting area seasonally for decades. Often spotted and heard in the yard are Pileated Woodpeckers, Barred Owls, Red-Bellied Woodpeckers, Red-Sholdered Hawks, and a plethora or jays, doves, and cardinals!
