Zamimpilo (on the N2 towards St. Lucia)
A community run farmer's and craft market, this is the best shopping experiences in Zululand. It is open during daytime, 7 days per week. Local women have established a large produce and craft market, getting their merchandise from established vegetable gardens and African craftsmen and selling in order to support their families and send their children to school.
Zulu basketsSomething special that you can buy at the market are Zulu baskets. Each basket is lovingly handcrafted in the northeast coastal and inland areas of KwaZulu Natal. Only natural fibres, materials and dyes are used to construct these unique treasures. Most of the people in this region are subsistence farmers living in traditional Kraals, areas bordered by acacia sticks that encircle traditional family dwellings.
The age-old tradition of basket weaving is usually passed down from grandmother to granddaughter. This helps to preserve Zulu culture as the grandmothers have the opportunity to recite oral history and stories to the younger generations as they all weave together.

Inside iSimangaliso Wetland Park is a huge protected area along the coast of South Africa’s Kwazulu-Natal Province and home to a large number of hippos, crocodiles, pelicans and flamingos. It stretches from St Lucia all the way up to Mozambique, with about 280 km of untouched coastline. iSimangaliso means “ place of wonders” in Zulu and it is truly just that. This region is part of a World Biodiversity Hotspot, the Maputaland Centre of Plant Endemism and the second most plant biodiverse region in Africa. It is also the largest estuarine system in Africa and the bottom of the Great Rift Valley. Five of the world’s seven turtle species are found off this coast and multiple threatened and protected species within the reserve. Although it is a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its unique biodiversity that extends into the Indian Ocean, it is still a relatively undervalued area by visitors to South Africa. The closest entrance into iSimangaliso is False Bay gate on the R22 and about 15 minutes driving from Ukuwela reserve gate. There are two beautiful marked walking trails inside the park from about 6- to 8km. In it relatively inexpensive and there is a small area where you can drive around, visit the False Bay lake and enjoy a picknick.

Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park is known as the best place in the word to see rhinos in the wild and absolute the best park in the area to go for a game drive. It is the oldest proclaimed nature reserve in Africa and about 96 000 hectares in size. It is home to a lot of the African animals, including The Big Five and African wild dogs. It is a reserve of breathtaking scenery and an exciting drive captures the feeling of how this area must have been 100 years ago. In the 1820's Shaka, the great Zulu king, used this area as his royal hunting grounds on foot or by horse. Now you are only allowed to enter by car, and you don’t need a 4x4 to do a self-drive.
The Anew hotel is the most reliable company to go to for game drive if you don’t want to drive yourself. The hotel is in town and the game drives leave from the hotel parking lot. You can also do a guided drive from inside the park from Hilltop camp. This is the cheapest option at about R375,- per person (excluding park entry fees). It's impossible to book or find details online. They leave around 10am and you can make a reservation at the Hilltop reception desk in the morning before 9.30. It's great to combine this with a self-drive and a picnic and we highly recommend this.

Lebombo/Mkhuze Game Reserve is known as a birders paradise but it is so much more than that. It offers sightings of lions, African wild dogs and many more of the iconic African animals and is about 40.000 hectares in size.
It is great day drive from one side of the park to the other. You have to drive through a friendly community. The dirt road from the R22 to Mkuze can be a little bumpy. Please pack your lunch and snacks, as the restaurant in the Park is small and not always open. On your drive you will find several look-out points and bird hides.
