La Mariposa's Guide to Tulum

Sightseeing

Take a bike up beach road to reach the ruins rather than the highway! Once you arrive, make sure to hire a guide to truly appreciate the area. Try to go early before it gets busy (and really hot!)

Its a bit up the highway to Coba so I don't recommend taking a bike there. It wouldn't be the safest road to bike on and its hot. This is a nice cenote but it is busy - earlier the better if you want less people. The trade off is that the water will be really cold! This cenote does have facilities, lockers and snorkel gear.

We haven't been able to go all the way into Sian Ka'an unfortunately.... we tried walking in once but it is way longer than we expected! There are a lot of really big potholes, so if you decide to go by bike or car, account for the additional time it will take to get through the mogul road.

If you want more of a local feel, take a walk around downtown old Tulum. You'll find the typical souvenir shops (**pretty expensive so make sure to try and haggle), lively restaurants and bars, living necessities (market, furniture, lighting, etc) and lots of street art.

A nice spot on the public beach, Playa Pocna has a nice restaurant and comfortable loungers to spend the day - just buy drinks and food and you're all set!

Food scene

Outdoors, great food, drinks and affordable in the hotel zone! A great find whether you're coming here for pre-dinner drinks or simply want to enjoy yummy food from food trucks by the beach. Great vibe. Happy hour is everyday from 6-8pm.

Right in Aldea Zama, Totem has a large outdoor and indoor seating area, great service and delicious food. They have a full vegan menu and the pasta is made fresh.

Norita is located in the Art House Hotel in Aldea Zama. It has a lovely vibe, live jazz on weekends, seating indoor or around the pool. Food is presented really well and people dress up to be fancy here. Its a nice night out :)

Neighbourhoods

A bit more budget friendly than Aldea Zama, La Veleta has a nice laid back vibe with food trucks and restaurants with soft lighting. Make sure to where comfortable shoes because most of the roads are not paved yet and bring a flashlight if walking around later in the evening!

Quintessentially Tulum, this is the area made popular in all the vlogs and insta pages. Great for people watching or being the people to be watched, just walk the beach or book yourself into a beach club for the day. We love to bike down earlier in the day, enjoy the beach then head home and enjoy a peaceful evening. Alternatively, head down for happy hour, enjoy a bite to eat and party all night long!

The public beach is the northern section, which is part of the Tulum Archaeological Zone (turn left at the end of Av. Coba). Its quieter than the Hotel Zone which makes for a more low key beach experience. Its also ok to bring your own chairs and make a day of it without spending the high price of the beach clubs. There are a few options however, if you want to settle into a spot with lounge chairs, shade and access to facilities. It takes about an hour to walk the stretch of beach, so makes for a comfortable stroll.
