Sightseeing

Lake Hawea is spectacular and often far quieter than Lake Wanaka. The scenery will take your breath away. It is the perfect place to sit and just be, and kids can play for hours along the shoreline.

The river trail includes a stunning bike ride which can take you all the way into Wanaka. The river also sits alongside what is locally known as the ‘fairy forest’, as it has a number of fairy houses you can easily find - a favourite (easy) spot for families to adventure in.

The Hawea store is a 5 minute drive from the house and is your local ‘everything’ store, as well as a cafe and providing delicious takeaways. There is also a wonderful restaurant upstairs (openly seasonally), which can be read about here: https://neatplaces.co.nz/places/wanaka/eat-drink/hawea-store-kitchen Hot tip: on the weekends they often sell delicious pastries from the famous Pembroke patisserie too! (The almond croissant is a must). Scroggin is in Wanaka and is a devine spot, perfect for a quick bite or a full meal. They also offer early bird ‘ski’ specials, to grab on your way up the hill for the day. Hot favourites include the Whittaker’s dark chocolate salted cookies (decadent and oversized), and the blueberry scone.

Check out Redbridge berries! This is a pick your own strawberry place (you can also buy pre packed), and the strawberries are incredible. They also have coffee, ice creams (made with real fruit), iced coffee, and a few locals also contribute fresh flowers and art for purchase. It’s a lovely spot to duck out too.

Retail

Deval is a fabulous place if you fancy a bit of designer fashion. Owned by local Deb, the very friendly ladies inside (not snobby at all) are great, and a bonus, they usually offer coffee or bubbles while you browse. Heaven.

Having a car is a must.

There is limited public transport, however taxis are available (these cost roughly $45 one way to Wanaka).

Many cafes do not have takeaway cups.

Wanaka and Hawea are BIG on ‘reuse, reduce, recylce’. You’ll note that many cafes do not have takeaway cups, and it’s a good idea to get into a habit of taking takeaway cups with you (we have a number of this in the house for your use).
