Overview

Here are some local recommendations…places we love, and some entertainment thoughts. We are very proud of our high street in Totnes, boasting many interesting independent clothes and food shops, and on Friday and Saturday mornings there is a market in the civic square with artisan local foods and street food options. We have many health food shops here, our favorite is Greenlife, just off the Civic square, Ben’s Farm shop (formally Riverford) do a good line in organic fruit, veg and meat and deli for lunch snacks. If you prefer a supermarket, Morrisons is at the bottom of town. The Hairy Barista do the best coffee in town with a vegan twist, fab vegan cakes too, you will find it full of wonderful quirky Totnesians! The Curator at the bottom of town is also popular and not vegan if that’s not your thing. If you want a fantastic meal out we recommend The Riverford Field kitchen, great tasty organic food. you may need to book in advance as it’s very popular. Riverford is a few miles out of town, if you are looking for somewhere a bit closer to home try the local pubs/ bars Waterside, Rumour, or the pop up Pizza Pirates on Friday and Saturday nights. If you want to go a bit further afield Raffiki’s in Ashburton is very good. We have 2 local independent cinemas: Totnes cinema is a retro fitted cinema, and is a great all round experience with pre-movie cocktails and classic ads before your movie. The Barn in Dartington is set in the stunning Dartington gardens. We love to walk up on a nice evening a catch a movie then stroll home down the tree lined road, again a (different) all round experience, You can find their programs online. If you are there in the daytime check out the gardens and The Green Table for lunch, snacks, drinks and yummy cakes. One of the reasons we moved to Totnes was for the amazing conscious dance scene - you can dance pretty much every day of the week in Totnes. The drop in classes are: Monday evening Totnes Dance Collective @ The Civic Hall 7.30pm, Thursday evening conscious dance class with Emma Roberts/ Jo Hardy @ The Civic hall 7pm, Sunday morning Music led (outside dance) @ Pondfields 10.15. And of course our local walks to the river (have a local dip at the weir 5 mins from the house), or up to the Dartington estate (see map) or head to our local beaches, such as Blackpool Sands where there is a beach side eatery (the Venus Café). Burgh Island is also fun - down at Bigbury sands - and we like the beaches around Thurlestone, but honestly, they are all pretty nice. And then there is the moor in the other direction, with lovely river swim spots, wild ponies and Tors.
