Dense hardwood forests, backwater swamps, open waterways, and grassy meadows comprise the Big Thicket National Preserve, a more than 100,000-acre area that serves as an important home for a wide variety of wildlife. In 1981, the preserve was designated as an International Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, and in 2001 the American Bird Conservancy named it a Globally Important Bird Area. The preserve has more than 40 miles of hiking trails and is an ideal place for birdwatching enthusiasts.
