For centuries, Mainz Cathedral (Mainzer Dom) was considered a religious and political center of the Roman-German Empire and was therefore the site of coronations. Emperor Henry IV promoted the construction of the cathedral. The fateful and eventful history of the building was especially connected with the outstanding position of the archbishops of Mainz in the church and in the empire. The church survived seven fires!

Biebrich Palace (Schloss Biebrich) was the Baroque residence of the Princes and later Dukes of Nassau on the banks of the Rhine in Biebrich (incorporated into Wiesbaden in 1926). So strictly speaking, not exactly Mainz, but as the cities are interconnected so tightly, we absolutely recommend visiting the castle.

All around the year and 3 times a week: One of the oldest and probably most beautiful markets in Germany is the weekly market (Wochenmarkt) in Mainz. In the middle of the old city center on the picturesque cathedral squares, it is a great place to shop, stroll and enjoy. And just a few minutes walking distance from the appartment! Grab a bag and get your fresh vegetables, fruits and some of the typically regional foods for the week:)

Some say it is the most beautiful square in Mainz: The Cherry Orchard Square (Kirschgartenplatz).
The square where cherry trees once stranded is now home to Mainz's most beautiful half-timbered houses. Wander around and feel set back into medieval times!
