Food scene

We love starting our weekends off with a coffee and breakfast sandwich at Muddy Waters! Between their eclectic decor, big back deck with views of the Thames, and great coffee, this place has something for everyone! Rumor has it there was also a Hallmark Christmas movie filmed here last year.

Quintessentially New England seafood! Walk up and order and then grab a picnic table overlooking the marina to enjoy your meal. We love the lobster roll and bacon wrapped scallops! Some folks almost miss it because the road back to it runs between some old warehouses, but trust the GPS directions and you’ll be rewarded with quality seafood at a really cool spot!

A local favorite, it doesn’t get better than the fresh pasta here! Tucked away in a quiet, unassuming part of Groton, you might not know it driving past, but this place serves up some of the best Italian food in Southeastern CT! Full of old world charm and checkered tablecloths, Paul’s serves up good sized portions at reasonable prices in a cozy setting that feels like you’ve stepped back in time. From their indoor dining area you can watch as they make fresh pasta behind the front window and from the back deck you can enjoy your dinner looking out over the Thames! You can’t go wrong on any of the menu here, but if you enjoy seafood and love garlic, our favorite is the linguini with white clam sauce! Let us know what you think if you check it out!

The Social is our go to spot for a craft beer and gastropub food! Their beer menu on tap is extensive, with a ton of local offerings. There are so many good beers it’s hard to pick just one, so we recommend taking advantage of their flights. Some nights they also have live music and trivia too!

Sightseeing

Ocean Beach Park is just a short walk from our Airbnb. During high season this Beach Park charges admission, but we can provide pedestrian walk on passes free of charge. We enjoy going to the quieter ends of the beach further away from the large crowds the beach attracts on weekends to sunbathe and swim in the Long Island Sound! If you’re looking for more activity at the beach you can entertain yourself with the beach volleyball courts, a vintage mini golf course, a throwback arcade, and a tidal wading pool at the Western tip of the beach.

Clyde’s cider mill is a Fall season institution out here! This historic cider mill comes alive every Fall (usually opening around sept 1, double check their website for exact dates) and is packed every weekend throughout the fall with folks coming to see their historic cider press in action and buy their delicious apple cider, apple cider donuts, and hard cider! It gets crowded on fall weekends and the parking fills up, so if you’re planning to incorporate this into your visit we recommend going first thing when they open (there will probably still be lines).
