City/town information
Where Did Mardi Gras Start?
The original Mardi Gras started in 1703 in Mobile when French settlers celebrated at Twenty-Seven Mile Bluff, the first settlement in the city. This celebration was small and unlike what people think of Mardi Gras today. However, in 1711 in Mobile, Mardi Gras included a parade – believed to be the first in North America – that featured a papier-mâché bull.
In the ensuing years, parades and Mardi Gras celebrations became more involved and elaborate, evolving into the festive parades we think of today: colorful floats, lively music, bead tosses and more. In 1830, the first masked parading society in America – also called a “mystic society” – appeared in Mobile when Michael Kraft formed the Cowbellian de Rakin Society.
