Maketu is a small beachside village located within 15 minutes drive of Tauranga City. The village has a convenience store, fish and chip shop and cafe.
Fishing, walks, swimming
Kaituna Scenic Reserve, locally referred to as "The Cut" is the main mouth of the Kaituna River. It is a 5 minute drive from the house. It is a popular fishing spot with a pier/mole at the end. There is a lovely walk along the Spit where the native fauna and flora has been restored. You can swim on the beach but care must be taken as there is no surf patrol present and the conditions can vary

Newdicks beach is a secluded beach with plenty of shade provided by Pohutukawa trees. It is accessed over private land and there is a small cash fee to cross the land depending on mode of transport. Newdicks is a beautiful spot for fishing, swimming, picnics and walks on the beach. when conditions are right surfers congregate here

The Maketu Fish and Chip shop. World famous in NZ and immortalised by NZ artist Robin White. Good value traditional New Zealand meal a 5 minute walk up the road. We b search for phone number or take the 5 minute walk down the road and put your order in in person Hours vary but generally open from 12pm to 6pm or 7pm depending on the season

Te Puke is short drive from Maketu with all the basic amenities you will need - fuel groceries restaurants etc.
Rotorua is a 40 minute scenic drive away around lakes and Okere Falls. Rotorua is the North Island's premier tourist destination and easily accessible via Maketu
